AMA National Championship Enduro Series: Round 9 Hines wins Oklahoma Nat'l. By Bonnie McDonald OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, OCT. 19 KTM rider Kevin Hines whittled through National class competition to engrave his ,name on the Oklahoma City Crosstimber's National Enduro Overall Ch<\mpion trophy, today. Stiff competition by runnerup Terry Cunningham forced a battle of near-flawless time keeping and highly technical rnaneuvering and endurance. Neck and neck scores through the 10th check produced the winner when a 22 minute 59 second time kept the battle out of the tie-breaking arena by the very important second. Barreling through forest thickets presented no unusual hardship to Hines, but he mentioned spending some time taking sand samples through less stressful terrain. Even hurling body and bike over an occasional rock cascade added only to the thrill, not the spill of this wellseasoned rider. "Part of the challenge of this race is tunneling through tread-worn pathways and the 24-mile per hour pace through over 40 miles of tight trees," commented Cunningham. Expressing amazemen't at the quality of race KTM's Kevin Hines took the overall at the Oklahoma National Enduro but couldn't finish in Delaware, ending his bid for the championship title. course designed in less than six square miles, Cunningham quipped, he wondered what they could do with more space. Rated "high" among up-and-coming enduro racers is Matt Lane who led a good-sized contingent of tomorrow's racers to finish first in the Youth A class. '. Results OVERALL: Kevin Hines (KTM). .
