The event was the 12th round of the Rocky/Bell/ Metzeler/Hallman/ScottiLubridyne/ Texaco/AXO-sponsored Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series. White's only obstacle to becoming the eries Grand Champion for the third consecutive year was Open class Mark IV-sponsored R_J. Raddis on a KTM. But Faddis fell off the pace on the last lap to finish second in class and fifth overall. Meanwhile, White rode his Husky 250WR out front to win the event hands down by over two minutes. Coming in second overall was the 1984 Peninsula overall winner Mike McHale, who rode his Two Wheel World sponsoredHusky to the top of the Open class to' give the competition a 1-2 Husky punch. Along with a clear sky and temperatures in the low 70s, the Peninsula Trailriders Association gave the riders a course that was over 12 miles long. Trackmaster Bobby Wilt gave the riders four railroad track <.TOSSings, a lowf open and densely wooded trails and. a touch of fast firt' roads. The course waii. designed for wood riders as White took approximately three hours to complete the designated four laps. The event drew some of the top riders in the east as racers from as far as New York made the long trek to compete. In the 250cc class, Honda rider Bricky Hughes finally got his first taste of a Peninsula victory by completely laying waste to the re t of the class. Hughes cakewalked for the class win and third overall. Class points leader Roland King managed to stay within striking distance for two laps, but had a disasterous third lap to finish almost 10 minute 0(( the pace at the checkers. But fortunately for King, he was able to still come in second as third place rider Marty Hensley was uTtable to take advantage after being plagued by mechanical gremlins and falling to third.. In the 200cc class, Ricky Hilton is proving to be almost unstoppable this season as he stayed on the gas between the flags for the win., After doing some first lap shuffling. Rick Pi no on a Kawasaki and Yamahamounted Joel Burgess tried to put the pressure on Hilton but ended theday by stuffing the rest of the pack for the next two spots. Burgess' finish moved him from fifth 10 third in the series points while Pino was able to pad his second place in the standings. In 125cc action, a tight battle developed early between Suzuki rider Derek Kutcher, Honda rider Eric Colson and series class ...champion Jeff Taylor on a Kawasakil. At the end of the first lap, Taylor held a nine-second lead. But while Taylor pitted for gas every lap, Kutcher and Colson took a chance of every other lap and slowly put di tance on Taylor as the laps ticked away to finish in that order. Colson, who has attended only a couple series events, had hi best race of the season and caught the attention of Kutcher and Taylor as both were heard asking "Who was that guy on the old Honda that was going so fast?" In the 1000c class, Billy Cox and George Greer continued their yearlong baule at the front. Both riders lUrned lap times on the small bores that were competitive times in the larger classes. Greer set the pace for the first two laps, but settled into second as Cox sizzled the last two laps. They outdistanced the rest of the field to become the only riders in that class to go the full distance. Results 100: 1, Billy Cox (Hon); 2. George Greor (lwn); 3. Jason Gulley (Kewl, 125: 1, Derel< Kutcher ("Suz); 2. Eric Colaon (Hon); Seattle International Raceway today. Sipes led the points chase by 44 going into the contest and Team B.A.D. Boys' Doug Renfrow borrowed a bike from teammate and 1983 WMRRA champ Bruce Behall and tried 10 bridge the gap. Things weren't going Renfrow's way during the four-lap morning qualifiers (which determine grid position for the 10-lap finals). First Sipes' Interceptor won the 600cc Production qualifier by 20 seconds. And in the next heat bf combined 600cc and Open Cafe, Sipes' GSXR1100 won the Open while Renfrow's G5.550 D F on the from slr
