Taylor Roadracing (159) finished third overall. while Sport Cycle Racing (270) was fifth in the GTU class. AMA/MotoWorld U.S. Endurance Road R;.ce Series: Final round TeaR1 Texas grabs Paul Revere 250 win By Randy Marrs Photos by Mike Church and Marrs DA YTONA BEACH, FL, OCT. 19 After having been rained out in July, the' Paul Revere 250 took place Sunday at Daytona' International Speedway and the final round of the U.S. Endurance Series produced surprise winners. Texans Ollis Lance and Doug Polen entered as Team Texas . . 1£ and pIloted theIr se -sponsored Suzuki GSXRIIOO to the win, turning in 71 laps of the 3.56 mile road/tri-oval course in two hours and 29 minutes. Finishing second, just 55.38 seconds behind Team Texas, was .Team Lockhart who had already clInched the senes champIOnship. Wendell Phillips and Larry Shorts rode the team's Suzuki GSXRIIOO to the runner-up spot. _ Taylor Roadracin~and New Haven Suzuki finished third and fourth, respectively, both on the same lap as the first two finishers. The race produced three different leaders in Team Texas, Team Lockhart and Taylor Roadracing. The latter suffered elearical problems later traced LO a broken electrode on a spark plug, while Team Lockhart's' riders had visibility problems throughout the race due LO a seal that blew in the last practice session prior to the race. Paul Smith Racingof Austin, Texas, made the Paul Revere 250 a Texas route, as they LOok their Kendall OiIlD&D Exhaust/Austin Sport Cycles/DARE/University Cycles/RSCbacked Yamaha FRZ600 to the GTU class win, their second oC the year and one that earned them the series title in that division. Paul Smith and Bill SyCan covered 66 laps as did the GTU runner-up, Out &Out Racing. Third in GTU went LO Norwegian CaTTibean Lines II, who finished a lap down. The starting grid, already determined in July saw three of the top qualTfiers-f:ri1 to post. The number onequaliCierinJuly, Team Hammer. Cailed LO post. Also absent were frontrow qualifier Cycle Tech and the race's 1985 winner, Dr. John's Team Moto-Guzzi. Team Lockhart, New Haven Suzu- ki, Schwing Roaoraeing and Taylor Roadracing, all winners of series rounds this year, were on the grid. Several important rider changes had taken place since July. Former Dr. John's rider Larry Shorts had switched to Team Lockhart, and Doug Brauneck, another former Dr. John's rider, had moved to Taylor Roadracin~ and was instrumental in their win the week prior to the Paul Revere. The other major change involved the outside front row starter, Cycle" Pro Racin~, with Mike Harth replacing Dean Swims who moved to the RC CoLa entry. Seventy-three teams took the green flag for the 2:30 p.m. start with Ronl Ewerth on the Cycle Pro Racing Suzuki GSXR II 00 getting the holeshot with Brauneck on the Taylor Roadracing 1100 in tow. By the time the pair completed the first lap, Brauneck had the Michelin/ND/PBII Bel-Ray/Shi>ei/EK/Yoshimura/Dutch Cycle Works-sponsored, Mike Pattontuned Suzuki in front. Phillips, taking the first stint on the Lockhart Suzuki, briefly led lap three before Brauneck went back out Cront. Team Texas, who had started in 33rd spot on the grid, began to work their way to the front, taking over second by lap five, six seconds down on leader Brauneck. New Haven Suzuki's Kevin RenlZell was third and the Super Team Yamaha FZ750 ridden by Lance Jones and Danny Walker was fourth. Cycle Pro was running fifth. The GTU battle for first was between Jam-Up Racing's Donnie Row and Team Sunset's Terry Statum. Rowe, on the team's Yamaha FZ600, and Statum, riding a Kawasaki Ninja 600, traded the class lead back and forth, running 27th and 28th overall with the Jam-Up entry in the lead at the end oC the opening five laps. At the end of 10 laps Brauneck maintained the overall lead, with Team Texas second, New Haven third, Super Team fourth and Team Lockhart fifth. Strong gusts of wind, up to 35 mph at times, were giving the riders a tough time. Team Lockhart's run was being hampered by the 'previously mentioned blown oil seal.
