Jeff Frisz (41) and Vince DeVane (243) attack the Dade City Supercross track in Florida. riders in two and a half lap and did not back off when in the lead. He was quickon the 125, but hewas blinding fasL on the 250 and easily won maLO number three. Hicks was second off the line behind Frankie Brundage in the second malO of the 250cc race and seemed to be having some problems getting the bike to hook up coming out of the turns. He was riding as well as ever but couldn't get the drive he needed. At the stan of lap two, he found the missing traction and shot past Brundage. That was all it took as Hicks cruised in for his fourth straight mota and second Pro win of the day. The I25cc Intermediate race was a slam-bang affair with 20 talented riders on the line. Duane Benner holed maLO one and came around in the lead followed by Eric Browne and Jason Davenport. Browne pushed to the lead in lap three at the same time that Troy Welty moved into second. On the last lap, Welty moved to the lead and Craig Dav.is followed him across the line in second. Browne was first out of the gate in mota two, Welty was next and Benner followed at third, trailing course banners he picked up by cutting too close inside at the stan. At the end o[ lap one, Browne was still leading and Paul Vlach had climbed to s·econd. VJach took the lead [or good in lap two and Welty remained in second. Vlach took the malO but had a bad first mota and was out of the running. Welty's first and second were the winning combination. Lance Barnell pulled a major holeshot in malO one of the 250cc Inter- . mediate race. He seemed al ways to be riding on the edge o[ disaster but opened up a seven-second lead by the end of lap two. Todd Lehman was in second and Craig Davis had clawed his way to third after a back o[ the pack start. Near the end o[ lap five, Davis was on Barnell's back and' powered into the lead out o[ turn LWO o[ lap six. Davis quickly built a fivesecond lead and took the motQ. Bill Phillips was off the line just ahead of Davis in mota two and the two of them set,a frantic pace. They were never more than inches apart [or the entire race and were both gelling wide; Phillips to hold the lead and Davis to get it. On the last lap, Davis dove past [or the·win and the overall. Frisz fires up at Dade Motocross By Athie Sanders him, allowing Frisz to pull an eight- . second lead before DeVane was back on the gas. DeVane was far enough ahead of Reinholt, now in Lhird, not to lose his second-place finish. Reinholt led Andreu and McCabe across the [in ish line to round out Lhe top five. John Colljns after being taken out in the first malO, claimed a strong lead at the start o[ moto two when he mibbed theJlOleshoL and left Reinholt, Frisz, DeVane and then McCabe battling. They poured it on. and DeVane fell, dropping several positions. Rheinholt edged Collins out of the lead, leaving him to hold off Frisz's charging Suzuki. Collins, having problems putting pressure on his knee after the first moto crash, found it difficult to keep his bike from jumping out from under him in the berms. Frisz went ragged, making his .way into second. McCabe's bike threw the chain causing him to drop out and lose his fourth-place ride. Reinholt took Lhe win followed by Frisz, Collins, Glenn Somerville and DeVane. Frisz .( Suzuki/Gear/PSIIPlastic Warks/Bell Helmets/Smith Goggles/ Silkolene) said, "The set-up of the. track was better than it has ever been. I picked my way up from fifth to second in the second malO. Reinholt just got to the inside and kept a better line. He pulled away on the 500cc bike. Results PEEWEE STK: 1. Ronnie Renner (Yam); 2. Cushing, Norman blitz D·38 Kamikaze Attack Hare Scrambles DADE CITY, FL, SEPT. 27 By Bob and Diane Bell Suzuki-support rider Jeff Frisz dazzled the crowd as he put claims to the lion's share of the special $500 Open money class SUPERSTITION MTN, CA, SEPT. 21 at Dad~ City Raceway. Frisz charged into the first turn at . the start of moto one, bouncing John Reinholt out of the way to take over the lead. Reinbolt found Vince DeVane, Alan Andreu, Jon McCabe and John Collins sandwiched in between himself and the leader as they pulled out of the turn. Frisz and DeVane moved away from the pack and bauled wildly [or the front position. Andreu rode a lonesome third [or awhile, but Reinholt moved up past McCabe to close on him only to go down. He remounted and came back charging on McCabe's tail once again. Meanwhile, the dicing got heavier up [rant. The leaders charged side-by-side until DeVane's bike flew out from u.nder Brett Cushing and Randy Norman each claimed an overall victory in the 3rd Ann ual AMA District 38 Kamikaze Attack Hare Scrambles. Cushing claimed his win in Lhe Vet/Senior race, while Norman squeaked away the winner o[ the combined l25cc/250cc/Open race. "I had no idea where I was until Fudputout the checkered flag. It was a tough track with a lot of powder," said American Honda/Hi-Point/ Duralube/Sports Trackospon·sor.ed Norman after the race. The track was indeed tough, probably the toughest o[ the year. Square edges buried under several feet of silL littered the seven mile course. The race was run entirely in the mud hills with pit row being the only place to sit down. .
