On a borrowed Honda, he led moto one from flag-to-nag. In moto two, he. was in a three-way dice with Brad Bolton and Dave Newell. Newell eventually won ahead of Bolton and Mitchell. Newell had to battle back to fifth in round one after crashing in turn one and remounting in last. Newell's mind was on the 250cc Pro title. He came into the race leading LeeVern Berry byonly five points and Kip Sandell by eight. Newell started the evening off right by winning his heat, while Mitchell took the other heat. Everything was on the line in the IO-Iap main, and Newell, again, suffered a first-turn crash and restarted dead last. Berry took the holeshot but. lost the lead by lap two to Corey Cope. Newell had already moved up to midpack. At midrace, Berry dropped to fourth behind Cope, Buchli and Mitchell, while Newell had charged to ninth. Schmidt triples atSLIR RR By Gordon lunde FAIRMONT CITY, IL, SEPT. 28 St. Louis International Raceway hosted the final round of Midwest Regional AMA/CCS Sprint Races under rare blue skies. The rain halted just in time [or practice Saturday morning. Run-off water [Jowing across the track in turn 12 slowed practice times but evenuall y stopped to the relief o[ the riders. The riders were very concerned about racing through this fast left-hander leading orllo the front sLraighl. P~c tice saw some scary slides in that corner. The Formula Twins riders were trea ted to the presence o[ Ba ttle of The'Twins Grand Prix rider Gene Church who brought his new Buell/ Harley-Davidson to SLIR. Church traveled from Turnersburg, North Carolina, to compete in his third CCS event, the minimum [or an Expert rider to' compete at the National Finals at Daytona Beach, Florida. The races at Daytona would give him extra Lrack time at that facility to tune his bike for the BoTT event in March. Church won hi heat race by a huge margin. Sunday's [inal point paying events started with the Formula Twins race which was won by Rockford, Illinois' Charlie Lang on his self-sponsored 500 Ducati. Church led from the start on his Harley-Owners Group/H.D. Motor Co.lDun~op sponsored bike and was of[ to a giant lead. It looked like a runaway until the sevemh lap of the eight lap race, when the carburetor came of[ the number two cylinder on Church' bike and he limped into the pits on one cylinder, giving away the number one and two spots and finishing third. The Expert Unlimited race was dominated by Phil Schmidt aboard the Middleton Kawasaki/Yamahasponsored Yamaha FZ750. Schmidt rode as though he owned the track, never giving up the lead over the eight laps. Jim Sherrill got away in second and stayed there, followed closely by Eric Moe. Schmidt then got of[ the line first in the Heavyweight race, leading Moe and Mike Treadaway. Treadaway got by Moe, pulling Jim Sherrill with him. The top [our places were set for the race but the battles for the other places were hectic. Treadaway kept hammering on Schm idt, almost getting by on lap'six and again on lap seven. herrill and Moe ran consistenly but spread out. Charles Buse pursued them in fifth, staying in front of Paul Noble and Mike Harlow. Noble and Harlow diced forrive laps until Harlow dove underneath in turn one, and then pulled away. Marshall, Wisconsin's Schmidt returned in Formula One to try for win number three. Again, Schmidt rocketed out front. Sherrill gave chase and the pair began to pull away [rom the pack. Treadaway, Gordy Rudolph, Moe and Noble were in a hot battle [or third. Entering turn six, Rudolph on the outside and Treadaway inside, the two riders committed themselves to lines which at the apex came to be the same line. The two hit hard, sending Rudolph of( the track and done for the day. with his Suzuki showing Yamaha colors on the tail section. Rudolph did not go down but was in too much pain from being hit in the hip to continue the race. Treadaway also went down, resulting in a few KBker Exhaust Systems Canoga Parle, California Prices start at S179. For catalog and ordering information, call Kerker at 818-999-3060.
