Michelin has announced they are
offering a $1000 contingency prize
to the winning riders of the Suzuki
GSXR760, Suzuki GSXR11 00 and
Honda 500 Interceptor races at
the November 6-9 WERA Grand
National Finals Road Race at
Georgia's Road Atlanta. The winning rider of each race will be
awarded $1000 if his/her bike is
equipped with Michelin tires (front
and rear) and has Michelin decals

An article which appeared in
the October 15 issue of Cycle
News, which was based on an
October 3 news release issued by
Supercross, Inc. (SXl), a newly formed
investor financed entertainment firm,
has apparently caused some confusion
with regard to the operation by Stadium MOlorsports, Inc. (SMC), which
has filed Chapter II under bankruptcy
law, of its 1987 Supercross events.
Since 1972 SMC has produced
supercross events throughout the u.s.,
beginning with a single event in Los
Angeles in 1972 and expanding to the
point that seven events are planned
for the 1987 season. In every year
since 1972, except 1984 when SMC
and Pace Management Corporation
joined together to form their own sanctioning body, the supercross events
have been sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association.
In 1985 a new sanctioning agreement was signed by SMC and Pace
with the AMA. That agreement will
expire at the end of 1986. SMC and
Pace attempted to exercise a three-year
renewal of that agreement but a dispute has arisen with AMA as to
whether the renewal right was properly exercised. Without prejudice to
the rights of the parties in that dispute, a renewal agreement for 1987
has been signed by SMC, Pace and
AMA providing sanctions for the
1987 season.
"We decided to honor our original
agreement with SMC (and Pace) and
issue them sanctions for the 1987 season," said Pat Murphy, AMA director of marketing and public relations, "Negotiations are going on
regarding a longer term sanctioning
agreement."
SXl was formed to inject investor
funds into SMC and eventually to
make an offer to purchase from SMC
the rights to promote SMC's supercross events. Any such offer would
have to be approved by the court having jurisdiction over SMC's Chapter
II proceeding. Until an offer to purchase SMC's rights is made and approved by the court, SMC will continue to operate all of its supercross
events, although it may retain SXlto
perform certain functions with those
events. It is not anticipaed that any
offer to puchase SMC' s righ ts w ill be
consumated and approved prior to
March 1987.
SXI has had no contact with AMA
to date, although it is contemplated
that as a part of the purchase of
SMC's assets, SXI will ask AMA to
substitute it for SMC on the sanctioning agreement.
