Floyd Huntz, meanwhile, topped an overflow Pro Comp . class en route to the WIn. Pro Stock was a 16-bike eIiminator with enough alternates . . .. to b~tng II close to a 32-blke held. It was In the second round wh~re Vance met his match. New Jersey s Randy Mason was racing in £ront of a home crowd and he upset the number one q ualifieron the quarter mile with his 8.37-second, 157.61 mph run. Vance stopped the clocks at 8.43/157.89. Blades continued to run through the ranks as he topped Russ Nyberg with his 8.33/154.39 run to Nyberg's 8.62/151.00. In the Pro Stock semifinals, Mason beat Mike Keyte, who red lighted, with his 8.33/157.34; .Keyce's run was an 8.62/141.95. Dave Schultz also saw red against Blades' winning run of 8.48/155.17. Blades took his second Pro Stock win in as many months when he topped Mason in the finals. Blades turned in an 8.25/155.70 to edge Mason and his 8.48/156.25. The Pro Comp class was overflowing with competitors and Kawasaki- mounted Jim Dodich had the number one qualifying spot neatly tucked away. In the second round, however, Dodich came up against Steve Drake and was ousted as Drake turned in a 7.828/171. 75. Meanwhile, Huntz cruised through the first and second rounds with wins over jim Shumacher and Bryan Bennett. Drake broke on his quarterfinal win and couldn't return for the semis, so Huntz soloed in at 8.083/ 166.35 for the win. Willie Foster beat Neal Lane, 8.187/162.16 to 8.384/156.25, to join Huntz in the final. Huntz came in with 8.12, 8.04 and 8.08 winning passes on his Kawasaki while Foster had an 8.60 and two 8.18s. Foster knew he was going to have to cut the tree close in order to have a shot at the win, but he cut it too close and red Iigh ted. H untz took the laid back win. Pro Gas action saw Phil Gordon win from the 25th qualifying spot in the 32-bike field while Charles Seger took the runner-up position after qualifying 26th. Gordon turned in a 9.26/130.24 to Seger's 10.78/100.00. Seger got an unearned bye in the second round at 9.04/143.31; Donald Dixon and Thomas Harper staged up in the first round and Harper took off with the tree coming down, thus disqualifying himself. Dixon took off behind Harper, crossed the centerline and was also disqualified. This left no competition for Seger in the second round. If there had been, his 9.04 would have been a breakout run for him and he wouldn't have made the finals. Super Gas was the only class that saw a top qualifier go home with the win. Richard Sandarg qualified in the number two spot and LOok home thewin with a 10.23/107.65 to Martin Jacobs' red lighted 10.22/125.00. Super Camp, a new class in IDBA racing in 1986, enjoyed its first 32bike field. A run quicker than 8.60 in qualifying is no good and quicker than 8.60 in eliminations means a loss. In the final there was a double "breakout". Pete Barnhart turned in an 8.57/148.51 and Sam Patton turned an 8.58/152.02; in the case of both riders coming in below 8.60, the one who breaks out least is the winner . and thus Patton took the win. Todd Moore of Florida got the win light in the Super Eliminator finals after qualifying in the number II spot. Moore edged Marcy Boyle, the number eight qualifier, 8.64/151.00 to 8.79/152.28. The Competition Eliminator class saw a 16-bike eliminator Sportsman category run on a full tree at five tenths time intervals from established records or factors. Running quicker than the record requires a dial-down in the next round. Much like the· other classes, the number one qualifierdidn't win the Competition Eliminator class. Instead the win went to the number five· qualifier, Steve TanneT. Tanner turned in a 10.85/113.79 on a 10.86 record to top Lisa Powell's 11.04/113.20 on a 10.48 record. • Results PRO STOCK: 1.
