Cook's wins in both Handicap and Scratch mains boosts him past fifth·placed Jobn Houston Jr., who didn't compete, but quite away back (rom tbird place Jim Si emore while Pat Linn appears to be (u lly retired. For pure e,,:'Citement, Lhe Handicap was a true thriller while the Scratch main was prelly much a write off after he pulled the number one posi· tion (or the license to steal. There was no cowboying around in the main as Cookie came off the pole for a wire· to-wire job with Bart Bast coming 0[£ last but using good lines LO take second. Martin and the MPE special came 0[£ the line second side-by·side witb Sisemore, off the wall, but Jimbo held a wide line. for second around the turn. Bast, however, closed the inside line and LOok over on tbe nextcircuil. With checkers in hand, Cook wheelied for two laps for the applauding crowd. Mike Solis leapt to the front of the Handicap main and was looking good as he held off Parsons' advances until the Richmond Yamaha/BMW/ J awa rider got a bit wide. Cook caugbt up on the tbird lap but was not getting by until olis blew the number four corner and crashed. Both Bast and isemore were there bu t on the wrong side as Cook was in Lhe rigbt spot and LOok off for the win with Sisemore inching out Bast in a tbriller. Vance Felicio pulled Lhe Green Hornet trick in Division Two and buzzed the boys out of the way for the win. Gordon Rudy moved just wide enough for the change but then closed it to take second over Scolly Mc eil's Elegant Hair-Affair special and Shawn Reppert Lrying too hard and gelling fourth after Ted Scruggs and Mick Obradavicb had some soil testing. Steve Martynse led the Division Three guys into tbe first turn and parked it while Dan Neilson came off the yardage line for the win over Joe Leonard and Lyle Gossetl. Chris Paulson and Bast met up for Lbe featured Match race with Bast the winner w,qen Paulson lit up tbe tire coming 0[£ the first turn on the first lap of the rubber round. Bast started wide on the initial round and won by a bike length while Paulson worked doubly hard to come (rom behind LO nip the Bast Bros. Sault, Nordstrom top Roseburg MX By Clay Ught ROSEBURG, OR, SEPT. 13 Honda-mounted Rick Bault burned the competition in the Open Intermediate class at the seventh round of the AMA Summer MX Series held at Clarks Branch Raceway in Roseburg. Rod Nordstrom came all the way up from Eureka, California LO thump to a double moLO rout of the 30-40 Professional class on his ATK 510. Local speedster Ryan Huffman started off the day by walloping tbe 80cc Intermediate/Junior class. Huffman pushed his way into huge leads in both moto , leaving Chuck Standeford and Cbad Berry LO swap it out for runnersup in the moto which went the way of Standeford. Berry got the nod in molO two for runnerup behind Huffman's flawless I-I performances, while Californians Freddie ordsLrom and Greg Church wapped motos with ordstrom coming out on top of the Junior portion via 2-1 rides over fellow Honda pilot Church. Third overall was Shawn Highland with 4-3 rides. Theday's largest class was the 125cc Junior class, which saw Yamaha of Roseburg's Terry Davis demolish both mOlOS. Davis led Berry ~o tbe cbeckers in moto one and again took a win in molO two for a I-I demolition to beat Coburn, who edged out Berry for second. In the combined 250cc Ju· niorclass, Yamaha rider Rick Roberts used consistent 2-2 rides to take top brass with second in the overalls going to Honda rider Keith Peterson, winner of molO two for a 6-1 Lally to break a tie with Honda riders Larry Wright (4-3) and Bryan Senn (3-4). Billy Dickerson was fifth. One of the day's best rides was Honda of Roseburg's Bault, who won both Open Intermediate/Junior clashes. In the first molO it was Dana Hansen and Bault leading Lhe field down the long downhill, but shortly after, Bault put a huge lead on the competition,leaving Hansen LOscrap it out with Mike Markham, wbich was the final finish order. In the second moLO, Baultjumpedouttoan early lead and lapped all but Intermediates Hansen and Markham, and Junior winner Kevin Seevers (KTM).
