class. Majeski got a good drive as they came of{ turn four on the second Lap, and took the lead which he held to the end, with Texter righton his tail. While many were watching Texter get beat for the first time this year, the 750s traded positions like a hot potato, with Max George finally securing it about half way, but Foard stayed close, finishing just five yards behind. The Amateurs had their usual close races in the 250cc final. This time George Fultz grabbed the lead from Ben Machamer, Mike Klopp and Dave Lesnick. While Klopp and Machamer fought closely over second, Lesnick slid down about halfway, getting up, but way back. While Fultz held on to win by about three lengths, Machamer just nipped Klopp at the line. Heberlingand Foard quickly pulled away as the Senior class exited the second turn. With Foard staying close throughout, Joe Gately and Bill Blackwood fought over third most of . the way. Going for the £lag, Foard either was sandbagging or he got his Rotax really hooked up, as he shot past Heberling to win by a length. Results 250 EX: 1. Dale Gingrich (Yam); 2. Stork bombs Spearfish MX By Mary Hanson SPEARFISH, SO, SEPT. 14 The Borderline Racing Associ. ation concluded its 1986 motocross racing season today with the double points/championship race held in Spearfish, South Dakota, and it was Bill Stork who topped the day's races. The highlight of the day was "The Fun Race," that was held at the end of the day's motos. The Fun Race included top riders from many classes who jumped on Minis to compete. Bill Stork took the early lead with Clint Overman right behind. As the moto progres ed, Stork began to put more and more distance between him and the rest of the field. Overman was also sitting quite comfortably, unchallenged. After a bad start, Hanson began moving his way up through the pack. He flew past Randy Stahla over a set of dou bLe , then worked his way up past Bendigo. Hanson had assumed the third-place position, but Ladner charged after him and began to challenge for third place. As the two continued to push each other harder and harder, they began to pick up more and more speed as they closed in on Overman. Soon after Ladner went down and lost all hopes of rounding out the. top four. Stork went on to take the win; Overman, Hanson, Wagner and Rader rounded out the top five. It was Dale Ruggles who was first of{ the line in the 125cc Pro action. Following him were Stork, Gene Montgomery and Overman. By the end of the first lap, Stork had shot past Ruggles. Later in the moto, while Rader was passing Montgomery and Jensen was passing Mueller, Ruggles started closing in on Stork. As the two continued to dice, Rader and Montgomery battled for the fourth-place position and began to close in on Overman. Ruggles fought a long and hard battle but wa un uccessful in slipping past Stork, so Ruggles settled for second place. Overman held out to finish in the thirdplace spot. Rader and Montgomery finished fourth and fifth. The second moto once again saw Ruggles take the early lead. Ruggles, however, was unable to hold on to his fir t-place position as Stork quickly took over. tork went on to take the overall win and Ruggles settled for second. I-< Q,) Steve Crevier (1 01). Huff stuffs 'em at Pekin ST By Bill Holt PEKI ,IL, SEPT. 14 The two big stories at the Peking M.e. sponsored 35th round of the D-17 Dirt Track Series were Scott Huff and the track it elf. Huff rolled his Cycle Creations/ Jacksonville Honda/Pierce's/S&G Hondas to bad-to-back wins in the Mini and 125cc classes on aslick, blue grooved oval that had all of the riders guessing all day. Randy Smith ledoff the day with a convincing win over Josh Martin in the 50cc class and then HuH, returning to form after a disappointing Last few weeks, found a way to get off the line quickly and ran away with the Mini class and held off a determined Bart Schmulbach 10 take the 125cc Win. Bart chmulbach didn't let a close loss in the 125ccclass slow him down in the 250s. He 1ined up beside second heat winner Dan Carter in the [inal and proceeded 10 destroy the competition with a rocket holeshot and a smooth high line. While Schmulbach wa pulling away .from the field, Carter and Shawn Wade were figh ting each other for the thi rd spot sin e Tom utton had a death grip on the second spot from the flash of the green. Wade got away from Carter in the late laps and Dana McNeil moved through the pack from a back row start to challenge Carter but fell short at the checkers. Glen Milleville grabbed the early lead in the 400cc final and spent the next three laps fending off the charges o[ Eric Eschmeyer. Eschmeyer ran it in and under Milleville at the end of lap three and turned the second-place battle over to Mark Augustine, who hounded Milleville 10 the end but settled for third. . Wy Schleyhahn and the Schleyhahn Floor Covering Honda styled 10 the heat win in the 500cc class but had stiff competition in the final. Aaron Crockett had flipped the Wabash Valley Cycles Yamaha in the heat and had to stan the final from the back row. The holeshot in the final belonged 10 Tom Sutton, and he rode like a winner for three corners then the slick groove let him go high, and Schleyhahn slipped under for the lead towing the wide sliding Crockett with him. Schleyhahn didn't make a mistake for four laps, When Schleyhahn finally did slip, Crockett roared by into the lead. Schleyhahn kept it close, but couldn't turn the tide. Sutton held off Tony Wessing and Steve Farrell for third. Dave Stanfield beat points leader Les Eslinger to the first tum and rode the race of his life to hold Eslinger off for the first three laps. A slow entry into the first tum of lap four cost Stanfield the lead; he was close on Eslinger, but could never get by for the rest of the race. Results PEE WEE; 1. Randy Smith (Suz); 2. Goodfellow aces Shannonville RR By Jeremy Fleming SHANNONVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, SEPT. 14 Vancouver's Gary Goodfellow made a surprise Regional race appearance at round 10 of the Castrol Eastern Canada Challenge Series and'scored wins in both Pro 750ccSuperbikeand the Pro Open Superbike 20-lap feature. National Tour stars Goodfellow, Steve Crevier and Art "the dan" Robbins were all making rare Regional appearances at Shannonville in preparation for the final National round at the end of September. Along with Suzuki factory-backed Michel Mercier, who had already clinched both the Pro 750cc Superbike and Open Regionaltitles, this group made up the list of favori tes [or the crowd to follow. Track conditions were difficult in the feature race. Earlier in the day, a rider with an oil leak in Amateur Open had soaked the track, taking down 13 riders in one lap before he fell too. It lOok over an hour [or comer workers and a large volunteer crew to mop up the mess, and it changed the racing for the day. Crevier led from the start on his stock Pacific Yamaha FZ750, equipped with slicks from his blownup Superbike. Goodfellow was second on the Suzuki GSXR750R with Paul MacMilian's stock Brooklin Honda VFR750 in third, a cautious Mercier fourth on the GSX and Robbins fifth on the Rothma\ls-Honda RS500. All riders were being careful, looking for traction, wi th !=revier and Ma Millan (sensing a possible production vs. superbike upset?) taking the most chances, AtlO laps Robbins pulled off after getting as high as third. "It just didn't seem worth it," explained an annoyed Robbins later. "I couldn't get a handle on the traction, and riding around half the comers straight up doesn't suit my style. So I figured that I'd come in with the bike in one piece, and save it for the National." While Robbins made for the pits, Goodfellow made a dash to the front . wi th Mercier hot on his heels. Crevier stayed with the leadig pair, but tire problems forced him to drop off the pace, giving third 10 the charging MacMillan. With five laps to go, Goodfellow was about a second ahead of Mercier, who in turn had Maci\1illan glued to his tail pipe. MacMillan tried everything he knew 10 get past while Mercier seemed unintere ted in having a go at Goodfellow. "I think Gary was more willing to take chances with the slippery track," said Mercier. "I didn't want to give second away, though. So I settled for second, and brought the bike back in one piece so that my mechanic could have ome time off before the Nationall" Goodfellow took the win by less than a second from Mercier, who beat MacMillan to the finish by less than a bike length. After the race, Goodfellow announced that due 10 some contractual obligations that had sidelined Kevin Schwantz, Mercier would be his teammate in a month's time at the prestigious Castrol Six-Hour Endurance event in Australia. When Crevier slowed right down with twO laps 10 go, the battle for founh turned into a wild affair between orm Murphy, riding with a broken pelvis on his GSXR750, and Tom Douglas riding a Yamaha FZ750 superbike for the second time. Murphy got fourth, Douglas fifth and a frustrated Crevier still held on to sixth. ..0 o ... u o Results AM 125 GP; 1: Rick Gauvier (Han); 2. Fred Bakker (Han); 3. Tom Woodley (Han). AM F-2: 1.
