Spangler grabs Salem MX win By Peggy Adamic SALEM, OH, SEPT. 7 Dale Spangler took the win in the 250cc/Open Ada s in Western Reserve MX action. The Kawasaki Team Green rider Chris Crew won the 750cc Modified Production class on his Suzuki at Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, California. Jepsen takes two at Sears Point RR By Roger Smith SONOMA, CA, SEPT. 14 The AFM held another race at Sears Point International Raceway after a season of insurance problems. Jim Jepsen and his 40 Yamaha, had no problem dominating the 600cc Modified Production and 600cc Stock classes. The Modified cia s came first and Jepsen won the holeshot and was never threatened. But the pack of riders battling for second was where the action was. After the first lap, Kevin Crow ther and Eric Kondo crossed the start line wheel-to-wheel, with je(( Hoeppner, Matt McClurg and Todd Kimble close behind. Kondo got the upper hand on Crowther in tum six and refused Crowther's attempts to pass. The race went on with Crowther stuck on Kondo's rear wheel, and a tight freight train less than a second behind Crowther. Skip Gatrell worked his way to the front of the freight train, but couldn't close on Crowther. After laps of trying, Crowther be'dt Kondo to the checkered flag by a few feet, only to have the pass taken away by a red flag due to a crash halfway around the track. The order from the previous lap was the official finish; Jepsen won handily followed by Kondo, Crowther and Gatrell. Jepson ran away with the 600cc Stock class as well, but for Crowther it was a chance to get back the second place finish stolen from him earlier. Once the pack stretched out, Jepsen was out in front. Crowther, Kondo and Gatrell were in a knot a few seconds back. john Fryer, Kurt Marriner and Lindsay Thomas formed a second tight knot behind them. As they all closed in, in tum 11, Thomas found the magic line and came out in second place, closing on Jepsen. But j ep 'en Just turned up tlw wick to a 1.55 pace and moved away. Kondo found his way past Crowther and then Thomas, and after another lap it was jepsen, Kondo, Crowther and Gatrell. Crowther found himself at Kondo's rear wheel again but this time made his move earlier. He found his chance coming out of the esses and slipped past Kondo as they accelerated through turn nine. Kondo fought hard, pulling up to Crowthers rear wheel repeatedly, but at the checkered flag the order was jepsen, Crowther and Kondo. Results OPEN GP: 1. Ken MacNeill Jr. (Kew); 2. Rick Boepple and john Diezic each took one of the 250cc C moto wins but Boepple took the overall, finishing 2- I to Diezic's 1-4 moLO finishes. Boepple stormed through the first tum with Henry Havenstein, Bob HarringLOn and Diezic behind. Diezi and Harrington changed places with Diezic routing his Kawasaki around Havenstein and selling his sight on Boepple. The two front runners rode tire-to-tire until Diezic overtook the lead. Boepple finished second followed by Havenstein, Harrington and jeU Kadas. Mike Williams grabbed the holeshot to start the second moto with Boepple at his side. Williams edged out Boepple in the second turn for the lead with Harrington and Havenstein following in third and fourth.
