AMA National Championship Hillclimb Series: Round 6 Newsome, Gerencer top Freemansburg By Maxine Casey FREEMANSBURG, PA, SEPT. 14 ~ 00 Harley-Davidson rider Louie Gerencer executed a perfect holeshot and rode a string La the top of the 500 foot hill at .... Q.) ..0 o .... u Freemansburg for top honors in the 750cc class and fast time of the day. Triumph-mounted David Newsome powered his 500cc steel steed over in 8.83 seconds for top time in his class. BSA rider Jim Clark came closest to Gerencer's 8.09 second blast with an 8.37 second ride. Doyle Disbennett (Yamaha) was third with 8.62 seconds. Jeff Yoder and Tom Reiser finished fourth and fifth aboard XR750 H-Ds. National winner Rod Riddle (BSA) was second in the 500cc class with a 9.08 second ride. Triumph pilot David Hale finished third with 9.57 seconds. STP SpeCial Honda rider Greg Williams was fourth and Bruce Sweigart finished fifth aboard a Triumph. Greg Williams, who was injuredat the National on August 4, made his first ride a super fast one. Unfortunately the rimer failed to work. Several riders thought the ride would have beaten everyone but Gerencer. Bushkill Valley M.C. did a lot of work on their hill and it was in very good condition. Unexpected traction just past the second breaker cau ed several experienced riders including Earl Bowlby to fall. Bowlby's falls usually consist of his laying the BSA on its side and sl iding out from under it. This time he went fIying through the air. He was not injured. Daniel logs Lumberjack Enduro win By Bill Herndon HUNGRY VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 14 The first round of the California Racing Club's Fall Enduro Series opened today with the long-awaited Lumberjack Enduro and the overall win went to Rick Daniel on his Husqvarna 430cc Automatic, with a score of 5.331. "Everything went real good," said Daniel, "and my Auto ran great 'till the second loop special test. First, I lost my from brake about four-and-ahaH miles into the loop, then on Miller Jeep Trail, my tranny overheated and it wouldn't downshift to first. I was flat out on Miller to compensate, and I ran out of gas at 38.9 miles. (Roben) Boretree gave me gas and saved my hide."
