Green rocks Oregon TT By Clay Light CLACKAMAS, OR, AUG. 22 National number 24, Randy Green, swepl.the evening's Expert TT program at the final round of the AMA Western Regional Championship Series, held at Oregon Sidewinders Clubgrounds in Clackamas. Green took top honors in (he 20-lap Expert main, A.J. Eschwig won the Junior thril,ler, and Troy Yeo gunned down the Pro-Am final. The $5000 program completed the Pro TT season for the Sidewinders. Time trials got the program underway with Experts out first. Kirk Strong who has been the fastest Expert here all season, stopped the clocks at 14.15 seconds on his Megacycle .Cams/ Lynnwood Cycle/Simpson Honda 600. He was followed by Wood Rotax rider'1ohn Wincewicz (H.56), 'Green (14.57) and Dan Bennett (14.89). Eschwig used a 15.25 tositatthetopof the Junior heap, followed closely by Californian Donnie Harrell (15.26). Tim Stults posted a third fastest 15.35 time to edge Triumph rider Steve Kendig, who recorded a 15:41. Trophy·dashes took the four fastest in each class with Eschwig taking the Junior dash and Hawaii's Kris Kiser winning the ProAm dash. In the Experts runoff, Green beat Wincewicz, Strong and Bennett. Kiser took the first of two Pro-Am heats on his Powroll supported Honda, while heat two was topped by Scott Chappell (Rtx). In the first Junior'heat, Eschwig look a win on the Marushin/Universi.ty Honda 600. Harrell won heat ·two, and Stults took the third and final Junior heat. National number 13 Mickey Fay took the win narrowly over Strong after a wheel-to-wheel duel in the first Expert heat. Wincewicz won, while Green took the third and fastest Expert heat. " The first main event of the evening was the lO-lap, Pro-Am final. The crowd of 3500 came· to life when Washington's Chappell shot into the lead at the flash of the green light. By lap two, however, he had yielded to 250cc Honda-mounted Kiser. Kiser was on the gas, as was impressive Mitch McGinnis, who was making his Pro-Am debut. McGinnis and Kiser-had a bloody battle for the lead, and .were soon joined by Chappell and Yeo (sponsored by Woodland Honda). Yeo came from midpack to settle into the top five halfway through the main, then nabbed Chappell. Yeo's next targets were Kiser and McGinnis. Yeo nabbed Kiser coming down the hill, while McGinnis made an incredible finish line pass to nab second from Kiser. Don Paul (Honda) and Chappell filled out the top five. In the 12-lap Junior main, the Reginal Junior crown was up for grabs between Eschwig and Harrell, who were a mere eight points apart. If Eschwig won, Harrell needed to finish third or better to nab the title. Eschwig rocketed his Honda into the _ lead over Stults, Harrell and HarleyDavidson-mounted Daren Arnold. By lap two, Eschwig had built upa huge lead on second-place Stults and Arnold in third, while Harrell ran fourth ahead of a huge midpack battle for fifth. Harrell carved his way to third late in the main, and finished there behind Eschwig and Stults. The Expert's 20-lap clash was a battle between Fay, Green and pointleader Strong for, the Regional Expert crown. It looked as though Strong would easily take the title until the second lap, when the Washington speedster sputtered to the sidelines and watched in horror as Fay took third behind leader Green and an impressive Wincewicz. Green had the largest lead oPtheevening, an eighthlap ahead of Wincewicz, who put the . same margin on Fay. A four way battle for fourth went on behind Fay, consisting of Duane "Gumbie" Gerrard (Yamaha), Bennett, semi-winner Dim McDonnell (Honda) and Donald Wilson (H-D). The race was red flagged on the final lap when Ge~ rard and 'Bennett tangled, sending Bennett sprawling to the ground and '_moving Gerrard to fourth and Mc..- Donnell into fifth. Green took the _ .. Steve Aseltine (H·D). .Bridges burns Baylands ST By Mike Vancil FREMONT, ·CA, AUG. 22 Todd Bridges outdistanced a nine-rider field in the 500cc Pro class lOnight at Baylands Raceway Park in Fremont, capturing short track wins in both the heat race and the main event. A heavy rider turnout promptedBaylands management to announce that another race wiJI be scheduled, and if the turnout is as good or better than tonight's, the)'e will be a serious effort to put together a regular Baylands series. 'Bridges put together two perfect rides aboard his Alma Transpor-tsponsored ROlax 500 shan tracker leaving the other riders with only a glimpe of his red, white and blue, Alma team jacket. Finishing a solid ·second in the final after a dismal showing in the tieat race was Andy Tresser, from Redwood City. After the heat race, Andy's mentor, his father Carl, figured out the proper gearing for gelling around the super smooth, traction-perfect Baylands short track. Boulder Creek's Gordon Rudy finished third on a ROlax. Favorites Frank Sanchez and Adam Sabedra WeI:~no.t riding at 100% because each has -spem long periods away from racing.
