CMC/Dodge Dakota Trans-Cal Motocross Series: Round J O'Mara, Leisk, Stanton top Trans-Cal opener ADELANTO, CA, SEPT. 6-7 Team Honda's Johnny O'Mara, Jeff Leisk and Yamaha rider Jeff Stanton took the 125, 250cc and Open Pro class wins, respectively, at today's opening round of the Continental MotDspoTt Club's (CMC) Dodge Dakota Trans-Cal Motocross Series, held at Sunrise Cycle Park. In 'the Vet Pros, Yamaha 12 riders swept the LOp three po itions, with Billy Grossi taking the overall , after spliting moLO wins with Rex Staten; 'Gary Seinics was third. The 80cc Expert victory fell LO Klemm Research-sponsored Paul Winn. The 45-entry 125cc Pro field was trimmed to 36 riders through two four-lap qualifiers and a consolation race. In the first qualifier, FMF I AXOsponsored "Wild Willie" Surratt led for three laps until falling and dropping out of a transfer spot. This let Yamaha rider Bader Manneh take the win over Dennis Parker, Brian Pryor, O'Mara and Jeff Mabery. Qualifier two had Ty Davis leading wire-towire over Larry Brooks, Kyle Lewis and Bryan Bruner. Yamaha pilot Brian Myerscough wound up fifth after a seventh-place start. Surratt returned in the four-lap consolation to win over Colin Karcher and Ed Arnet; all three were riding Hondas. After finishing second behind Honda Support rider Brooks in the opening 125cc main moto, O'Mara led moLO twO start to finish to take the overall win. Brooks ran most of the race in third, but managed to get past Surratt just before the white-flag lap to take second and second overall. Third for the day fell to Surratt, whose 4-3 moto scores beat Myerscough's 6-4; Manneh went 5-5 for fifth. Surratt led each of the four laps to win the first 250cc Pro qualifier over Leisk, Russ Wageman and Tommy Watts. In the second qualifier, Billy ."Who?" Frank took the win over Stamon, who worked his way up from fourth at the end of lap one; Manneh and Davis finished third and fourth. Sean Lollar earned one of the final six berths in the main motos by taking the consolation win over Brad Toms and Keith Williamson. Manneh had the early lead when .. the first 250c~ Pro moLO got underway, but by lap four, Leisk was out from for good. Manneh chased him home in second, while Mabery, Stanton and Kiedrowski raced for third.. Stamon nabbed third place on the ninth of 12 laps, and held it to the finish over Kiedrowski and Mabery. Moto two was nearly a repeat as Manneh jumped to the }lead of the pack with Leisk in second. Before the halfway point, Leisk had secured the lead; a lap later, Stamon also passed Manneh to land second. While the two leaders ran LO the checkered flag, Manneh felt pressure from Kiedrowski, who finally bagged third place on the final go-around. ·Leisk's perfen I-I score gave him the overall win, while Stamon earned second with his 3-2 rides. Manneh (2-4). Kiedrowski (4-3) and Wageman (7-5) filled the top five payoff spots. Stamon had a fairly easy go in the first :V>Occ Pro moto, disposing of. Frank on the second lap and riding on to the checkered flag. Wageman also passed Frank on lap two; four laps later, Kawasaki rider Tommy Watts dropped Frank another position, to fourth. Once in third, Watts set his sights on Wageman. Lap nine saw Watts grab second, where he finished behind Stanton; Wageman, Frank and Greg Torgerson were third through fifth. . Kentucky-based Watts got out front at the start of moto two, with Wageman and Stanton trailing. Stanton knew what he had to do - the Michigan rider grabbed second when Wageman had problems on lap two, then closed on Watts, finally passing him at the midway poim of the 12lap moto. Third, fourth and fifth place was unchanged from the second lap on; those positions were filled by Joey Schlag, Terry McGinnis and Dane Wigington, who earned fifth overall. Stanton and Watts took home firstand second-place money, while third overall fell to the 3-6 score of Wageman; McGinnis (6-4) was fourth. Honda-mounted Kenny Zahrt led the charge when the first Vet ·Pro moto /,:ot underway; Staten, Grossi and ATK rider Randy Rodrigu('ltrailed. Staten nabbed the lead on lap 'three when Zahrt fell to third behind Grossi. Lap six saw Rodriguez move the Honda rider back another position when he took over third. With three laps remaining in the 10-lap race, Semics secured fourth and the top finishing positions were set. Staten took the moto victory over Grossi, Rodriguez, Semics and Zahrt. Rodriguez crashed at the beginning of moto two, breaking his collarbone. W.hen the pack finished the first circuit around Sunrise's sandy, whoop-filled track, Grossi had the lead. During the race, there were very few changes in the top positions, as Grossi led Staten, Semics and Jim Hoover across the finish line; Zahrt was fifth. Grossi's second-moLO victory earned him the overall, with Staten (1-2), Semics (4-3), Zahrt (5-5) and Hoover (8-4) rounding out the LOp five. Winn had a good race with Suzuki . rider Buddy Antunez in the first 80cc' Expert moto umil Antunez crashed while leading the final lap. Winn scored the win over Jimmy Gaddis and Jimmy Button. Antunez had more problems as he led the first half of moLO two, then DNF. Second-place rider Mike Pascarella inherited the lead, which he LOok to the checkered flag in the eight-lap contest. Winn ended up second in the moto, with Shane 'Trittler third. The overall w.em to Winn's 1-2 'day; Pascarella (4-1) and Button (3-5) filled the place and show spots. • Results 125 PRo: 1.
