With the Pro season over, he decided to return to action riding one of Kosar's sano FZ750 uperbike . He was unquestionably ru ty at first, (inishing fi fth overall in the B uperbike class. He dropped to ixth overall, fourth Expert. in hi second race in the A Superbike cia s. By the time the Formula One race began, Even had his sea legs back and charged to an easy win over the uzuki lloos of David Cheek and David Finley. The best race of the day came in the D Superbike class, an all Yamaha RZ350 division. This class is made up mostly of Novices, and the few Experts 10 the class usually have a tough time with·the upstarts. The first seven places in the race were a toss-up until the fourth Iap. Mark Russo began pad· dmg hIS lead, and Roy Lewis held a cautious second, but the battle for the next five places was covered by a spread of only two or three seconds. Bradley Reh took third at the fini h,' Michael Martin was fourth and Mike Cook was the first Expert in filth overall. NY, J LY 27 Jay Skidmore of Millbrook, New York took ational honors in the 125 and 500cc Amateur divisions during the 1986 AMA Amateur/Youth Grand ational Dirt Track Championships, held in Harpursville and Alton the week of July 19-27. The title in the 250c Amateur clas went to George Pri e of SicklervilJe, New Jersey. Racing during theweek·longchampionship series, which was hosted by the Square Deal Riders M/Cof Binghamton, New York, consisted of short track, TT, scrambles and hall-mile competition. Amateur short track racing initiated the six grueling events. The 125 and 500ccclasses were dominated by Skidmore, whose brilliance projected into The TT scrambles and dimmed only lightly in the hall-mile competition. Grand National laurels in the 2.sOcc class were taken by- Price, a pleasant youngster who rode several Youth and Amateur clas e . Price took convincing wins in the 80cc Modified cia s in shon track and TT ra ing, while placing econd in the half·mile behind Mike Sponseller. Price was bested by only two points for the overall title in the 125cc Schoolboy lass by Larry Pegram. Pegram. a 13·year·old who became known in ew York as the "Baltimore Bullet. ,. and who was a even-time 1985 ational Champion, goto(f toa slow tart. pia ing fourth in the Schoolboy shon track. Looking more like a mOlocrosser, Pegram led the field around the TT course for his firSt win. As the tracks got longer and faster, so did Pegram. He won the 125cc Schoolboy as well as the 125 and 250cc Amateur haH-mile events. Entries in the Senior and Super Senior class were more than anticipated, and so was the competition. The Over-30 and Over-40 riders pUt on an excellent show. Powers surges to Mooers MX win By Steve Manor MOOERS, NY, AUG. 16 Veteran Doug Powers powered his way to victory in the 25lcc Open Expert class at Dirt Track Inc. in northern New York state after being lapped by four other riders. Powers debut at the 4200 foot long motocross track proved to be a crowd pleaser. It was in the final heat of the day when Powers proved determina· tiona.nd riding skill can bean unbeatable combination. Unable to restart it after a hall-doleJ1 kicks Powers pushed the bike oIr the track: While searching (or the problem three other riders £Jew by Powers and his dead machine. Struggling to get the machine started, the three bikes lapped the one-time race leader. Powers finally got the big bike started and was out on the track making-up time and distance. With less than four laps 10 go, Powers pilOted his Honda past all three riders, lapped them, and reclaimed his first place slot. Powers slid past the bikes to take the checkered £Jag to a standing ovation. Youth, grace and determination highlighted the racing in the twin motos of the 0-8Occ Novice class. AUG. 17 Kawasaki Central of Montgomery-sponsored Keith Jones topped the 125cc class at the last race to be held by the Flying Wheels MX Club. Tripling of insurance costs have prompted the cI ub to cease hosting races. Jones led the first moto until the hallway point when he dropped to third behind Levon Pendergrass and Keith Hatfield. Jones couldn't close the gap and the order remained the same until the finish.
