National Papers (Continued from page 3) close that they were all placed on the victory stand! Thenextstopon the circuit will be at Ascot Park in Gardena, California, on Saturday night, September 20. It is at AscOllhat both Bubba and Ricky, especially the former, could find problems. Shoben has never been able to win at Ascot and has not even been close. But since his last appearance at Ascot Shobert has gone on to win no less than three National half mile events and will end the season as the high point rider in that category for the first time. He is indeed primed for Ascot with a whole new half mile altitude. In recent times Ascot has belonged to the darkhorse or upset inclined riders such as Ted Boody, Ronnie Jones and most recently Randy Goss. Goss has found the rest of the circuit a disappointment this year, but the last Ascot National found him unbeatable. The final stop will be at Sacramento under the lights on Saturday nigh t, Septem bel' 27. The lead rider is Scott Parker who has won the last two Sacramento Mile in a row-one in the daytime and the most recent at night. Parker has also won at Ascot, but never at San Jose where he holds the record for second place finishesfive. Some of those were by inches, some by feet, a few by yards, but never a front spot. He is overdue, long overdue. Oklahoma's Ronnie Jones i perhaps enjoying his best year on lhe Camel Pro circuit. Jones has one win and many top five finishes. He's no longer just a main event qualifier, but a strong contender for one of the three spots in the winner's circle. There is one more· factor at stake for the first time this year. Camel has placed a new bonus of $25,000 which will go to the rider who scores the most combined points in dirt track and road race Nationals. Many are referring to the Camel Challenge Cup as being the Bubba Cup since Shobert scored a bunch of road race points earlier this season. But hold on. His buddy, Wayne Rainey, has cored a ton of points in Formula One and Superbike events and now says he has madea deal with Ted Boody to "lease" one of Ted's Honda dirt trackers on which he'll give San Jose and Sacramento a shot in an altempt to outscore Bubba for lhe 25,000. The last time Wayne threw his kg over a mile machine he nearly won it all, missing by less than a foot!. That happened at the final mile last season at ,sacramento. If Rainey can pull it orr it will probably be the only thing Shobert doesn 'tlay claim to this year in dirt track circles. Some riders have a habit of pulling back once they win the title, or find out they can't win the number one plate. To me, Bubba is not the type to sit back and just count the $200,000plus he'lI earn this year before the season is totally over. He has too many things going for him in the record books that have to be gained or lost on Septem bel' 14, 20 and 27. One finaL reminder for Bubba. If you go all out in the final three races, Bubba. you can catch and pass Dick Mann for fifth place on the all-time win list and you can also move into a tie with Joe Leonard for fourth. Joe held lOp spot for many years with 27 career wins. The eyes of Texas. and the rest of the nation, will be upon Bubba Shobert the next three weekends. • Roxy Rockwood Ride in the 1hzns-CaI Series.
