Peter Collins became the fir t British
peedway World Champion in 14
year as he cored a 14-poim win at
the Individual World Final in Katowice, Poland. Collins beat fellow
countrymen Malcolm Simmons and
Phil Crump 10 take the championship.
Motocross action saw Belgium sweep
the rest of the world in the Trophee
des Nations in Wohlen, Switzerland,
beatingtheU SR by 14 points. Roger
DeCoster led the Belgian romp with a
1-4 score. The U.S. team finished
sixth overall with Tony DiStefano
grabbing a pair of sevenths and Bob
Hannah taking 10th overall.
Gary Nixon maintained his lead in
the Formula 750 World Championship despite a D F and a 17th place
finish in the Dut h round of the road
race series in Assen, Holland. Spaniard Victor Paloma beal Roet Van
Dulman and Phil Read.
Texan Terry Poovey won the Freemans hort Track AMA/Camel Pro
Series ational in TalIedaga, Alabama, after haking the pressure applied by runner-up Guy McC.lure.
Third place went 10 Hank COli with
Jay Springsteen finishing fourth. In
the race for the Grand ational
Championship, Gary SCOII finished
seventh and was caught slightly by
Springsteen while Kenny Roberts lost
ground with his 12th place fini h. In
Novice action Lance Jones was the
big winner while Steve Elo took the
Junior/Expert feature.
Don Vesco's Yamaha was the fastest
mOlOrcycle during a rain-shortened
speed week at Bonneville. Vesco a'ashed his streamliner and slid through
the traps at almost 273 mph. Vesco
was credited with a new record of
252.229 mph.
Belgian Gaston Rahier continued to'
dominate the 125cc Motocross World
Championship series with a perfect
I-I tally in the We t German round
in Laubus-Eschbach, West Germany.
American Marty Smith finished
second with hi 4-2 finish while Italy's
Lolli Tomasso wrapped up third
place.
Warren Reid beat Gary Denton and
Bruce McDougal to win the 125cc
Pro class at the CMC Motocross in
Orange, California. In other Pro class
action. John Smith took the 250cc
win while Jeff Foland took the Open
class win.

Mike Wilson. Dave Faria was the
winner in the 250cc Expert class after
holding off Kim Jorgensen.
The NMA Grand National Championships were held in Springfield,
Missouri, and in the 0-83cc Expert
class (12-16) it was Brian Myerscough
edging Mike Brown and Jeff Ward
for the win. In the 0-105cc Expert
class, Myerscough took another win
after holding of( Randy Tysor and
Scott Burnworth.
