According to the AMA, Saunders suffered bruises and a sore jaw, while Mohen is semi-comatose in the hospital's imensive care unit. Mohan suffered a dislocated shoulder, abrasions, and is missing a few from teeth. Doctors are optimistic. Junior National Points leader Bryan McDowell . clinched the junior National Chllmpionship during the 10-lap junior fina I at Syracuse, but he did it the hard way. McDowell led the race in the early going, but tangled with home-state favorite Brian Bonesteel on lap seven while bauling for the lead. Both riders wem imo the hay bales, fortunately, neither was hurt. McDowell was able to make the restart (lining up in last place), while Bonesteel was forced to retire with a bem motorcycle. New York's Phil Vigneri, who had been running third when the red £lag came out, led the single-row restart into turn one, setting the pace for Harley-moumed Chance Darling and fellow Harley pilot Donnie Myers. At the end of lap eight, Darling had dropped VigneJ:i to second, and Myers was holding o£f a challenge from Les Washbon. The top three positions held to the £lag, while McDowell moved into fourth by the finish, followed by Bryan Villella in fifth. The race belonged to Darling (sponsored by MOlorcydeSpecialties/ Simpson/WD-40/Hi-poiDt/David Parem/Martin Noble), but the championship went to fourth place McDowell, who needed fifth to cinch the ritle. McDowell is sponsored by Shoei/Bruce's Body Shop/Diamond/ Kal-Guard/Uke's H-D/Hi-Point/ Ron McCabe Trenching/Ben's Backhoe/K8cN/Castrol/H-D Motor Co. National Shobert smoked off the line at the start of the main event, towing- a determined Graham on his rear fender. The duo pulled away from the pack almost immediately, leaving Boody, Farris," Chandler and jorgensen to fight for third. Parker was caught unprepared when the light turned green and wem imo turn one well back, despite having a front row start. Shobert and Graham had broken away from the pack by the end of lap one, and Parker completed the first circuit in 12th place. Parker began to pick off riders one by one and by the end of the. second go-around had moved up to eighth, with, a hardcharging Carr riding behind him in nimh. For the next few laps, Shobert put distance on Graham and the (ormer teammates continued to power away from the field. Third-place Boody led a tightly-formed freight train made upof Farris, Chandler and jorgensen. Parker followed in seventh, and Poovey had moved up to eighth, dropping Carr to nimh. On lap seven, Shobert turned in a 102.9 mph lap, and on lap eight he boosted his speed to more than 103 mph. He cominued to run all alone in from, with a three-second lead on Graham, who had a two-second lead on Boody. Boody led the battle for third (or the next several laps, with Parker, Farris, jorgensen, Chandler and Poovey all trying for a shot at the show position. Springsteen paced a second clump of riders battling (or nimh, including jones, Carr, Morehead and Scou. Carr crashed out o( that baule late in the race when ·he slipped off the groove in turn three. "Coming into three I came in hot and got the back tire off the groove," he said. "It put me down before I could blink an eye." By lap 22, Boody led Farris, Parker and Chandler in a charge to catch a slowing Graham. Boody drafted by Graham on the back straight on lap 23, seuing up a free-for-all run to the checkered flag. Shobert took the win by a mill;, and Graham tried to retake second at the checkers, but just missed drafting Boody at the line. Farris (01lowed in fourth, with Parker, Chandler and Poovey in tow. The second clump of riders was led· across the line by Springsteen, who was followed by jorgensen, Morehead, Scott and lone . Goss, Eklund. and Estep rounded out the riders still on the track. Carr was credited with 16th, andllandy Texter, who crashed in turn one on lap 17. took 17th place. The top three finishers were all on Goodyears and they all had visible wear. While Shobert's tire was wellworn on the abrasive. Syracuse track surface, it didn't show the excessive wear suffered by tires on the second and third place bikes. Boody's tire was worn down to the cord. and Graham's tire was so worn it was leaking air through a hole in the cord as he sat on his motorcycle in the winner's circle. • Results 25-LAP NATIONAl: 1.
