Sixteen qpen class beginners flung themselves mto the fnst corner and in two motos of hard racing all 16 made it through the first corner. Quickest 01 the Slarters turned out to be Robert Michell On his CR Honda. However Mitchell faded during the moto and did no better than fifth both times out; good enough for a fourth overaU. The pressure on Mitchell came (rom Mike Petrange10 and Damele, both on Hondas. In fact, in the first IDOlO Hondas took the first five places. Petrangelo took the opening moto win with Dameley finislrling second. In the second moto, Dame1e reversed the roles and asserted himself earlier. Nothing Petrangelo could do could nudge Damele from the lead as they ~ltlacked the stutter bumps nose,?-taJl or sometimes dicing side-bySide; Each expectmg the other to over cook it and crash, but they surprised each other and everyone else by nOl a:ashing. The 2-1 rides of Damele put hIS Palo Alto based CR in the winner's circle over Petrangelo's 1-2 performance. Rick Ryan loaned his private H_onda 250CR Honda to visiting fnend Bruce Gates so that the MinneSOIa rider cou Id contest the 250cc Pro ~~nl. Early leader Ron Day was soon JOined by the newcomer from Minnesota. Their battle carried them well ~earof the pack and though it resulted m. Day wmnmg, It had to cross his mmd that Gates was picking up valuable information about Day's approach to handling Baylands. In the second moLO Gates blew by Day in an aerial pass and went on to win overall, For the third time a class victory came about by a 2-1 perfor- mance being better than a 1-2 evening. Jack Hulse took a third on his Kawasaki 250 KX. In the Open Pro cia s Hulse was picture perfect, winning both motos WIth style and ease. Doing all the chasmg, but able only to end up with a second place was Jim Owens. Results PEE WEE: 1. Jerry Cunha (Ya;"): 2. Nick Pappas (Yam): 3. Matt Becker (Suz). MINI BEG: 1. Jon Morgan (Kaw): 2. In. 1986 they again watch an appreClallon as a rider styles his way to victory circle quite often. That rider is Mike Faria and he has already won 40 mains and the season hasa littleovera month togo. Friday at Costa Mesa Faria carried yet another checkered flag by winning the main event on a very crowded KLOS 95.5 Fox Ni~ht. Sandona, who is the second houest rider on the circuit to Faria at present, had the job of catching the leader but the way he was going no rider had a chance of making up the ground and when the Jerry King checkered flag fell it was Faria again by two bike lenghts over Sandona. Third spot went LO Brad Oxley who relegated PfeLZing LO last on the third lap. Gary Hicks and his Milne Bros.! Scou Goggles/Mom 8c Dad-sponsored Weslake, won a very controversial Handicap main event. Hicks found himself third when the race began, behmd leader Louis Kossuth and Andy orthrup. On the second lap Hicks bettered his position by one and then began LO apply the heat to Kossuth. Kossuth fought orr Hicks over the third and founh laps. On the last lap Hicks almost got .inside as they hit tum three but Kossuth fought him ocr ag-din. The leader then went wide out of the final corner and Hicks got inside and wheelied. It looked as though Kossuth beat him across the line but the scorers g-dve the win to Hick. Needless LOsay Kossuth and many of his followers could not believe the decision, but he had to be content with second spot. J~y Gianetti was moved up from ThIrd LO Second Division and he rewarded oHicials with a win over Kevin Krugh and Archie Perez who' also came up from Third Division. Shane Templeton was third over Billy Reel and John Balogn. The SLart of moLO two was a family affair as John and Billy Reel soared over the start hill in tandem. The Reel's pace kept them out front as John took the win over brother Billy while Tel'!JpleLOn once again wound ~p third. Conley came through trafhc for fourth and the overall win, followed by Btlly Reel and Templeton. Steve Thompson gated perfectly in the first 250cc C rfJoLO and ran off with the win over Jonathan Trull and Ricky Gardner.
