Vance and Hines' Terry Vance (Suz) clinched the NHRA Pro Stock National Championship with one round still remaining by taking the win inthe NHRAU.S. Nationals at Indianapolis. Indiana's Indy Raceway Park on September 1. Vance turned in an 8.299-second pass at 158.87 IYIph to defeat Mike Keyte (Suz)at 8.892/11 0.82 mph. Keyte broke on the final pass. The Pro Stock class was the only motorcycle class featured at the NHRA event. Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert's win in. the August 31 Springfield Mile was his seventh National win of the season and that leaves him just one shy of the all-time record of eight National wins in one season set by the legendary Joe Leonard in 1954. Shobert is an odds-on favorite to tie. if not top. Leonard's mark in the four remaining rounds of the '86 Camel Pro Series. Wegman suffered severe spinal injuries and possible paralysis. A benefit fund has been established to assist Wegman with his medical bills. At the recent Nissen 200 Camel Pro Series road race at Laguna Seca in northern California. road racer David Busby of Team America was busy in the inf'l8ld. not on the treck. Busby opted to use the event to announce his involvement with the United Sciences of America (USA) and didn't compete at Laguna Seca for the first time in some years. USA is a health and nutritional program that has been conceived and implemented by some of the top names in science and endorsed by several -sports superstars. For additional info. The RJ Reynolds brand has been involved in the FIM Motocross World Championship and in AMA/ Camel Pro Series racing in the U.S .• but has never been involved in the Grands Prix. Ohio's Dwight Mitchell recently rode his Harley-Davidson 883 Sportster from New York City to San Francisco in a record-setting 66 hours and 52 minutes. The advertising/public relations executive with Penny/Ohlmann/Neiman. Inc.• of Dayton. Ohio travelled within the National speed limit for the 2945 miles. According to the AFM's Mike Ross. the insurance problems with the AFM and Sears Point International Raceway that have caused the cancellation of AFM road racing at the facility have been solved and the schedule will go on as planned. "We had a long meeting with the track owners and worked the insurance problems out." Ross seid. A new version of the 500cc Elf Grand Prix road racer showed up at the final race in San Marino with a revised steering arrangement. The machine that Ron Haslam has raced all year has a single swing arm and an upright arm connected rigidly to the single suspension unit running up to the handlebars. The revi ed layout has a pivot between the upright arm and the bottom of the suspension unit with a tubular steel wishbone running back from that joint to the frame. The front of the frame is also cast in magnesium on the new bike which was tested but not raced. Haslam has reportedly elected to stay with Elf for 1987 as they have assured him that they will use four-cylinder engines, . Four-time World Champion Toni Mang will reportedly switch to his fourth cigarette company in four years and will ride in the yellow Camel colors in the 1987 250cc World Road Racing Championship. After going through HB. Marlboro and Rothmans. Mang will be Veteran road racer Kurt Liebmann had a very successfu I weekend of racing at the AMR Vintage Challenge in Loudon, New Hampshire on August 30-31. Liebmann won five races over the weekend - two 500cc Premier classes, the Formula 750 class, the F-2 class and the Battle of The Twins event. Team Honda's Micky Dymond won both motos to capture the Brazilian round of the 125cc World Motocross Championship in Campos. Brazil on August 31. Dutchman Davey Strijbos (Cag) finished second overall (2-2) and won the World Championship; third overall went to American Rod Smith (Ceg) with his 3-3 tally. Team Lockhart (Suz) won the August 30AMAIMotoWorid U.S. Enduran Road Race Series round at Georgia's Roebling Road Raceway. It was th third consecutive win of the series fo Team Lockhart.
