John Ramsay, meanwhile, continued his domination of the Honda 500 Interceptor Series with a win on the Ramsay Honda spOnsored Honda. Quarterley's win on the Open c1as Suzuki capped the closest and hardest fought race of the day. While the Eagle Racing pilot led from the green flag, first through fourth positions were hotly contested by Martone, Mark Bougas and Jon Gray. With lap times dipping into the 12s, it became evident that none of the four had the capability to pull out a clear advantage. The race came down to the final lap. Quanerley tapped the 1100's horsepower to pull-out a small lead over the hill with Martone similarly clear in second. Bougas and Gray, however, were locked side-by-side through the final turns and at the finish line it was Bougas ahead of Gray by a few inches for third overall and second 75Occ. The Honda Interceptor race was furious early in the race with Ram· say, Rich Burdick and Silas Hiscock locked together in one sliding unit. Then Burdjck over-cooked the entrance to turn four, lost the drive up the hill and both Ramsay and Hiscock were by. Once clear of the three-way battle, Ramsay found his stride (15s) and pulled out a commanding lead over Hiscock. It stayed that way to the flag. Bill Campbell had a fine ride through the field after a dismal start to finish fourth. One of the most exciting dices of the perfect-weather weekend went to Larry Hanlon and Brian O'Shea in Formula Two. O'Shea had the early lead while Hanlon drove through the pack after a slow start. By lap six Hanlon had O'Shea in his sights and then came-the battle: Hanlon would pass O'Shea anywhere and O'Shea responded by passing him right back. Lap times dropped into the high 145 as the two contenders for the lead battled to the final three turns. O'Shea's final pass in turn eight came up a liuJe shorl and Hanlon had the drive he needed to the checker. Among other notable dices for the Loudon Road Racing Association weekend of 568 entries was the Dale Quanerley/DflvidStrobel struggle in Modified Production One. Quarterley on the Eagle Racing FZ750 Yamaha Superbike was pitted against the GSXR II 00 of David Strobel in a dice that carried them into the low 12-second range. Their battle ended prematurely however as Strobel lost the rear end of the powerful Suzuki in the ultra-slow turn eight. IronicaJIy, Quarterley returned the crash later in the day, dropping the Eagle Racing Bimoto DB-l in the same ultra-slow turn in the Formula One race, giving the easy win to Strobel on his GSXR750 Suzuki. Polen left Talladega with $2700 and the total respect of anyone who watched him not only win three races in convincing fashion but also set a new track record for Talladega at I:00.63 in A Production aboard the Denton Motorcycle Cente~/RSC Performance Suzuki GSXRIIOO. Polen so completely dominated the Saturday heat races that even his competition conceded defeat before Sunday's finals. "The only race out there will be for second," admi tted Ron Ewerth who finished second to Polen in the A Production race. Polen began his record-breaking day by winning B Production on his Suzuki GSXR750, Polen led from the start and ended up with a 10-second margin of victory over Mike Harth. As Ewerth had said, the only battle was for second. Harth battled with Ewerth and Donnie Rowe for that spot. Polen broke the track record in that race. Polen turned around and bettered his own record in the A Production race on the GSXR 1100. Again Polen made it look easy, winnjng with a sizeable lead over runner-up Ewerth on another GSXRllOO, Greg Tysor finished third in that race on a Yamaha FZ600. The 500cc Interceptor race had the makings of a very exciting contest. Kurt Hall, who has been the top Interceptorrider in WERA's North Central Region, was on hand as was Southeast Region aces Greg Tysor, Ron Ewerth and Chip Terrell. Terrell had won the two previous Interceptor races in this region. Mark Andrews and Bart Winters have been successful in the CRRC races in Texas on their Interceptors and they were present as was fellow Texan Polen. Polen immediately opened up a large lead, sliding the Honda through every corner, and romping"to the win. Greg Tysor was by himself in second and Kurt Hall had to fight hard to hold off Winters, Ewerth and Terrell. To top off Polen's outstanding weekend the track owners let him go out after the day's events to break the track record in counter-clockwise direction on the GSXRJ 100. Polen was out for only three laps but got the job done by getting down toa 1:01.47, good enough' to break the record held previously by Team Hammer's Dave Sadowsi. In other action, Novice Scott Russell started in the second wave but still was able to catch Experts Kurt Hall and Mark Andrews to win the C Superbike ~ace on his Bray Pipelinel Cycle Mart/Wreckmaster-sponsored.
