"I was 22nd at the end of lap one, but after a year of bad starts I have a lot of practice at passing the other riders and I just kept trying. It was not 100 hard until I gOt up to the leading group and our bikes seemed to be the same ~ed. The only place I could really overtake was on the braking so I tried hard there every time." Jorge Martinez won his first World Championship with a careful ride into second place behind an inspired Pier Paolo Bianchi after a hot and exhausting 22-lap 80cc race. There was an interesting four-way battle between Bianchi on the Seel Eli!, MaT\inez on the Derbi, his teammate Manuel' Herreros and the Casal of Dutchman Hans Spaan. In the end Bianchi won apparently on sheer determination. Angel Nieto finished fifth on the third Derbi while reigning champion Stefan Dorflingel' was well out of contention on the Krauser. Bianchi received no help from teammate lan McConnachie, who got a poor start and felt the heat badly halfway through the race. August Auinger demonstrated that he does not need wet weather to win Grands Prix as he soundly beat the works Garrellis in their home territory during the I25cc race.
