Ingram tops Nazareth Regional Half Mile By Len Breech AZARETH, PA, AUG. 9 Dan Ingram's holeshot paid dividends, a he held off early challenges of Randy Texter then a late lap bid by Ronnie • 1'HE MORE YOU KNOW THE BETTERlT GETS FOR RIDER COURSE INFORMATION CALL: W 800·447·4700 MOTORCYCLE SAFETY FOUNDATION **PARTS** From '69 to Current LARGEST STOCK IN THE EAST UPS DAIl.Y Jones to win the Expert final on the rough, narrow groove track at the Nazareth Raceway Eastern RegIOnal Championship. Brian Bonesteel led a quartet of New York riders home in the Junior class, while Scott Stump completed a sweep of the three East Coast Regionals by taking the ProAm class at the ].M. Productionssponsored event. Pro-Am heats went LO tump, Scott Saunders, Ray West and Tom Majeski. A the Pro-Am final exited the second turn, Stump had put hi HarleyDavidson in £ront of We t, Saunder , Mark Wyskie and Majeski. As Stump and West sLarted to pull several lengths over the field, Saunders slipped back to a battle over fifth with Majeski and Eric Buckwalter: Wyskie took third after three laps, With Scott Mohan moving into a close fourth spot soon afterwards. While Stump kept West a con i tant three to four lengths behind, Mohan Larte~ putting heavy pressure on Wyskle. ~n the final lap, Mohan made a danng passon theout idea thepairentered the first turn. As they left the econd turn, Mohan had taken the final winners circle spot. Junior heats went to Mike Scott, Phil Vigerri and Bonesteel. Craig Estelle had a slight lead on the held as they hit the first turn in the mam, but his low line, below the "big dipper" in the middle of the first and econd turn was not the quickest as he was third behind Eric Johncox and Bonesteel, with Scott, Vigerri, Ron Bertrand and Robert Lewis ugluing over fourth. As the field came off the second turn on the second lap, Bonesteel put his XR in the point position, locking in the top three places. While Bonesteel wa pulling away from the field, Johncox and Estelle were battling over econd which wem to Johncox by half a length. A Al Wilcox waved the green flag sending the Experts off, Dan Ingram put his Harley a length in front of' Texter, Robert Crabbe and Jone . Jones took over third at the beginning of the second lap, as the top three began to pull away from the rest of the field. Texter appeared ready to make a bid for the lead around the halfway poim as the top three freig~t trained around the three foot Wide groove, but didn't, because of a loose contact lens. In the later laps, Jones and Texter battled over second with Jones putting his Honda into second on the seventh lap. Jones moved up to challenge Ingram in the closing laps, but passing was very tricky on the short straight, long sweeping turns and very narrow groove track. J ones made a bid on the final lap as they entered the first turn, but Ingram closed the door, winning by a length. Results PRO-AM: 1. Scott Stump IH-D); 2. Ray West (RlX): 3. Scott Mohan (H-D). Lofgren Racing wins Brainerd RR By Tracy Hagen BRAI ERD, MN, AUG. 9-10 The Doug Lofgren Racing Yamaha FZ600, ridden by Kevin Anibus, Al Burmeister and Guy Hiney, wok the overall win in a rain- hortened Cemral Roadracing Association fiv.e-hour endurance race at Brainerd International Ra eway. Second overall went to James Lichliter and Lloyd Rivers on a Pro-Tune Yamaha FZ600 with 97 laps, one shon of the winners, and third overall went to John Bergdahl, Tim DuPont and Bob Madsen on a Yamaha FZ600 with 96 lap. Saturday's endurance race sLarted promptly at noon with 52 te~ms. t~ in,g a three-wave SLart. The fust lIlCldem of the race occurred in highspeed turn two on the first lap. Harry jensen ran his Yamaha FZ750 .~([, then back on the track and into the path of Frank Hershman's Birchwood Honda VFR750. Both bikes crashed hard and were totaJ write-o££s yet Jensen and Hershman came out injury free_ "I ran off into the gravel," said Jensen, "and back onto the track wobbling." Hershman was very bitter, particularly since the bike was a loaner and he, with Dave Fraser, were defending champions. "He ran wide and then cut across the track. I happened to be the first poor sucker he hi t," said Hershman later. Bryon Lambert captured the early lead riding a uzuki GSXRI 100 he entered wtih Mark Thorson. Lambert established a fa t pace producing 1:53-1 :541ap times, a fuJI two seconds a lap faster than second place John Mulligan riding Travis Combs' Yamaha FZ750 as part of the Mulligan-Gene Radmer-Troy Sawvel team. Behind Mulligan rode Pete McComberon the Knotheads' Yamaha FJIlOO owned and co-ridden by Dave Hesli. But as the race wore on disaster struck all three of these teams. At the 40 minute mark Lambert's bike started running on three cylinders then onJy two. The high on-track temperatures caused severe carburetioD problems that were corrected after removing the fairing. Lambert and Thorson lost the lead and everal laps to Travis Combs. Misfortune came to the Combs' FZ one lap after a scheduled rider change at the two-hour mark. Rider Sawvel returned to his pit for a chain adjustment and removal of a seized rear brake. While Comb and crew repaired their bike Pete McComber crashed the Knotheads' FJ 1100 in turn 10. "We had been running Michelins aJl year but switched to Metzelers for this race," explained McComber. "The Metzelers slide a lot more and I finally lost it all in 10." At this poin t in the race weather became everyone's concern. A sky that was partly loudy at the beginning of the race was rapidly getting darker as a cold front moved in £rom the north. Temperatures dropped and 40 mph wind gusts provided a~ple Lail winds on BIR's mile-long straIght. At the race's three-hour mark rain started falling and slowly developed into a torrential downpour 20 minutes later. To make matters worse, quarter to half-inch diameter hail fell with the rain accompanied with occasionallightning. With visibility of less than 100 yards and no corner worker communication (radios were turned off for fear of lightning strikes) CRA race tewards called off the race at three hours and 47 minutes. When all the laps were counted up Yamaha FZ600 came home first, second and third. Fourth at 95 laps was Jeff John on and Gordy Nelson on the Hair Force Suzuki GSXR750 and fifth was claimed by John Meyer and Kyle Wells on a Kawasaki Ninja 600 with 94 lap. Sunday's sprint race program saw Bryon Lambert win Formula One, A Cafe and B Production. Double class wins wem to AI Burmeister and Glen Christianson. Results ENDURANCE: 1. Kevin Anibus.
