Ferrell, a former Jawa factory rider, was mounted on a Weslake for the first time. The English machine gave him problems in his Handicap heat, but he borrowed a bike for his Scratch heat, and beat Rob Pfetzing for second spot and earned a transfer. Chri tian was close to Sandona at the outset of lap twO, but the Illinois native turned • it on and ran away from the pack. When Jerry King's checkers signalled an end to the race, Sandona had a halftraightaway lead over Chri tian and Oxley. Scotty Brown (Keech peedwa~ Videos/Hallman Products/Shoe. Helmets/George Wenn/Scott Goggles Jawa) had Jed a number of Handicap main events at Costa Mesa, only to falter at the last moment. This week, Brown put hi bike on the pole at the start, and never budged; he won the main event from the 26-yard line, but young Gary Hicks leaned on him all the way. Brown coped with the pressure and at the finish it was Brown, Hicks and Keith Chrisco crossing the line nose-to-tail.
