Sandell wins LakewoodMX By Larry Johnson LAKEWOOD, CO, AUG. 3 Spons Riders Association of Colorado mOtocross fans witnessed the season's most exciting race today, in Lakewood. The 250cc Pro first mota was a classic wire-to-wire, three-rider battle. Although Kip Sandell did not win the mota, his efforts led to the overall. Stacey Cook led Derek Brown, Arlo Englund and Jim Mitchell through turn one at the start of the first moto. During the first lap, Mitchell flew up the camelback to second and took the lead before the lap was completed. Englund reached second by lap two, and the stage was nearly set. He found a right-hander where he could drift wide and shoot past Mitchell, but Mitchell regained the lead in the next turn. Englund then slammed into Mitchell as they dropped into a ditch, but Mitchell held on. On the next circuit, Englund took tlie lead, once' again in his favorite spot, but Mitchell cut inside on the next off-camber to gain it back. Englund successfully used the same tactic on the next lap, but Mitchell retailated at the ditch. Sandell had been cruising along behind the duel for two laps, looking for a spot to pass. He found it on lap five, leaping past Englund up the camelback. But Englund regained second after the doubles, and tried to take the lead, in the right-hander. This time Mitchell slid in from and cut him off. Sandell retook second on the next circuit, and positions held imo the next lap. Coming around the tight right turn before the stair steps, all three collided, but no one crashed; Englund regained second. Englund and Mitchell swapped places again on lap nine, but Mitchell shot back to the front a bit later. With two laps remaining, Sandell passed Englund, once more, for second, then several lapped riders began to imerfere, preventing any more position changes in the mota. Mitchell crossed the line just ahead of Sandell and Englund.
