'hands and that was holding onto the
lead. Faria proved that he was up to
the challenge as he held the lea d to
the checkered and won over Christian by a couple of lengths. Chrisco
was right there in third while Lucero,
aboard Faria's back up bike, rounded
out the field.
Tuff McBride (Red Baron Pizza/
R.S. Aviation/Casuol ]awa) finally
won the Handicap main after placing
second three times at South Bay Stadium. McBride was off the 20, but he
was gelling some heavy pressure from
Rich Sweaney who was trying to
power by on the outside. Sweaney
wa able lO move alongside, but he
didn't have the strength lO get ahead.
Sweaney then dropped to the inside
to try and get the job done. He
charged and caught McBride on the
last lap. As they came off turn four
the final time Sweaney got inside, but
McBride beat him lO the line by a
scant two feel. Third spot was taken
by Brad Oxley.

Faria on top at
AscotSpdwy
By Scott Daloisio
GARDENA. CA, AUG. 14
Mike Faria warmed up the
crowd on a chilly night when
he passed Alan Christian with
a hot move to win the Scratch
main event at Chris Agajanian 's Ascot
South Bay Stadium.
Christian rocketed from the pole
position and into the lead over Keith
Chrisco and Faria. Chrisco went to
the pole position while Faria and his
]awa went to the outside to churn,up
some dirt. They both put the heat on
the National Champion, but he hung
tough until lap three when Faria
(Shoei/] /George Wenn/Cody Products/Kal-Gard) zipped by on the back
chute. Faria's move met with the
approval of the crowd as he had
worked three hard laps to get the job
done. Now he had another job on his
Inc. Scratch main event before a large
crowd at John LaDouceur's Inland
MOlOrcycle Speedway. Even though
the crowd was of good size, many of
them were incensed when local favorite "Flyin' Mike" Faria was excluded
in the main.
All the controversy in the main
came early. Sandona, who was coming out of gate two, took Faria wide
in turn one. Faria bobbled and Lucero
went down to avoid hitting him. In
the meantime Christian and Sandona
had opened up a bulging lead. Faria
then went into turn three an in a nonAcademy Award winning performance he laid it down. Since it was
half the field down on the first lap
out came the red, but Faria got kicked
out for his obvious move.
With the crowd chanting a pasture
cheer the race was restarted and
Christian (STP/Valvoline/Cal-Fab/
Advantage Boats/Hi-Point Weslake)
bolted from the pole and into the
lead. Sandona camped directly on the
leader's rear tire with Lucero completing the formation just behind
Sandona. The three star riders circled
the track like they were tired together
for four consecutive laps and when
they crossed under the Sid Sutton
checkered it was Christian takig home
first place money.
Weslake riding Don Butler got the
gate from the shon yardage in the
Handicap main event, but it was
smooth riding Louis Kossuth (NJKI
Lou's Service/Smith Goggles ]awa)
who passed the leader in turn three
and went the distance lO win his
second IMS Handicap main of the
season. Once out front Kossuth lengthened it out to win by a half chute
while Butler turned in a masterful
job of holding back Mark Dwyer,
Faria and Christian for the runner-up
position.
Joe Kreisberg (Maurice's Used
Speedway Bikes Jawa) took the lead
on lap four in the Second Division
main event when leader Jon Boyer
had a rod come through the cases.
Jimmy Gentile,' who rides a ,bus to' •
the races, claimed the second place
spot while fine looking rookie Walt
Fas ter garnered th ird.
Duane "Pinky" Blake (Pro-Rider/
Custom Hair by Bubbles/KMET94.7/
Rip N Tear/Easy Riders Weslake)
saw his road clear and scored a popular win over Tony Bienen and Tom
Maffei in Third Division racing.
