anese media star Tadahiko Taira, was ruled out by engine problems. The problem appeared not long after the five hour mark, when Sarron was running in third, a lap down on Dominique Sarron and Mike Baldwin. The Yamaha slowed down from the' Spoon Corner on and pitted straight away. The Tech 21 team tried a number of things, including replacing the carburetors, but nothing couldsolvetheelu ivenoi escoming from the engine. Twenty-eight minutes after Sarron pitted, the team formally retired the bike. And what of Patrick Igoa and Gerard Coudry, the French Rothmans Honda endurance pecialists? The two Frenchmen had won both the first two rounds of the World Championship Endurance Series and were expected to make their effon at Suzuka, the third round, a race for points rather than glory. And it looked like things were going to plan. At the two and a half-hour mark Igoa had worked the Rothmans Honda R VF750 up to third, ahead of the Tech 21 Yamaha and behind Gardner and Robens. Then he tossed it away at the Spoon Corner. The prang and the sub equent repairs, including replacing the rear tire which had been completely flattened, cost the team 19 minutes and dropped it down to 37th place. Coudry and Igoa fought their way back up to 14th at the finish, only a lap shon of earning at least one series point. Their result would have been even more significant if their main series competitors, the factory Suzuki team of Herve Moineau and Bruno Le Bihan, had done any bener. Their Kenwood Suzuki GSXR 750 finished in 28th after Moineau dropped the bike in the first hour and they lost 45 minutes getting it soned out. The award for the biggest-heaned effon of the race had to go 10 the Yoshimura Suzuki effon of American Kevin chwantz and Japanese Formula One star SalOshi TsujimolO. SchwanlZ pitted the Kenwood Suzuki G XR 750, which they had qualified fifth fastest, about half an hour into his first stint and lost nearly three minlJltes fixing what was reponed to be ei ther a cl Ulch problem or hassles wi th a broken gearshift. That put the t am right off the leaderboard, but the two rode the bike back into third at the finish. Americans Dale Quarterley and Randy Renfrow qualified 41st aboard a Yamaha FZ750 and then finished the race in 18th place, 15 laps down onthewinner,182lapsascompared to Gardner and arron's 197. Three other Americans lOok part in the race and all DNF. Fred Merkel teamed with Tadashi Oshima on a Honda R VF750 but logged only 56 laps, while uzuki G XR750-mounted teammates Jeff Haney and Todd Brubaker were credited with 25 laps. Kork BallinglOn, the South African rider who has been campaigning the Camel Pro eries in the United States aboard MacLean Racing Hondas, teamed up with Victorian Rob Phillis and finished eighth depi te losing a lot of ti me setting the bike up again after an early crash that had dropp d them to 50th place out of 62 starters. • r----------------------------------------------------- THE $200,000** 1986 TRANS-CAL IS ALMOST HERE!!!
