Cooke City Trials to Mosteller By Diane Sando COOKE CITY, MT, JULY 27 The Second Annual Cooke City Challenge Cup Observed Trials took place high in the Rocky Mountains, just four miles from Yellowstone Park. Riders from Wyoming, Montana and California found to of the most challenging sections seen so far this year, ranging from whitewater streams to 100-year-old gold mines. When the event came to a close it was SWM-mounted Kenny Mosteller who turned in the day's low score in the Expert class, a 37 point ride. Mosteller's name will again go on the large trophy cup which is on permanent display in the All Seasons Yamaha showroom in Cooke City. Campfire conversations the night before the event centered around the rumor that the trials would be an easy one. That was not to be the case, as was explained by trials master Boyd Bernard of Burbank Yamaha in Burbank, California. Bernard announced at the riders meeting that he had laid out sections requiring skill rather than daring. Riders were required to complete three loops and the first section, dubbed Confidence Builder, seemed to get everyone off to a good ride. The second section, White Water, got things cooled down with most riders getting wet. Section three, Mr. Mud, lived up to its name and took points from all riders. Section four, Rocky's Hill, saw Wayne Strohman besting the Experts. Rounding out the first five sections was Sugar Shack, and it was Amateur class winner Dick Iiams who posted three cleans in that section. The second set of five sections had pine trees, rocks and twisting lines comprising sections six and seven. Those sections proved to be the deciding ones in ovice class action where Ross Stewart finished first wi th 60 points to edge out Mike Cook who turned in a 62 point performance. With a slippery downhill, a right turn into a rushing stream, and then back up a rock-studdP.d bank, section eight took most 01 the points from the Senior class riders. Section nine was a narrow drop through a slotted rock and back into Fisher Creek, get across any way you could and back up a slippery bank on the other side. Senior class winner Boyd Bernard managed to hold on to his five-point lead over Bob Strohman in the final section which consisted of two very slippery logs near the exit. Overall winner Mosteller said the trials was the best he had ridden in several years. Credi t for the success of the run goes LO All Seasons Yamaha, Burbank Yamaha, Rocky Mountain Racing and the Montana-Wyoming Trials Association. Results EX: 1. K. Mosteller (SWM); 2. M. The duo was riding at such a blistering pace it was a wonder Stock didn't crash before he did. Stork lost it in a desperate attempt to storm past Overman over the tabletop, and dropped back into third po,sition. But Stork wasn't about to give up. He picked up his pace and set his sights on second-running Dale Ruggles. Stork reeled Ruggles in, and blasted past over the whoops.
