White wails in Gloucester HS By Rider Writer GLOUCESTER, VA, AUG. 3 David White fired up his Team Hu ky/Cliff Cycles/ orri Tool Supply/Rocky/Lubridyne-sponsored Husqvarna 250WR and rode off with his fifth overall series victory at the eighth round of the RockyIRel IIMetzelerIHall man! ScotLITexaco/Lu bridynelAxQ-sponsored Virginia Championship Hare Scrambles Series. White wa among the fourth wave of riders to start and quickly set a sizzling pace.of 20 minutes a lap on the 6.6-mile course. Having been the state' Grand Champion for the past two seasons, White appears to be edging towards his third title. At trophy presentation, he said, "I wish the race had been longer. I hated to see the finish!" White's enth usiasm reflected that of many who thought that this was one of the best courses they had ridden. Action in the Senior class was very close as the top two riders finished onlya bike length apart. Rocky Cyclesponsored Tom Bartlett on a Honda and Husky-mounted Graham Kenan put on an intense battle all afternoon as thev continually swapped the lead. With the track not being conducive to a lot of pa ing, strategy ended up playing an important role. Kenan held the advantage going into the final sections of the race, but it was Bartlett taking the class win. Bartlett said, "There was one corner that botll of us would overshoot eacl1 lap. I knew my last chance to pass would be at that corner 0 I concentrated on wa tch ing for it." The strategy worked as Kenan overshot the turn and Bartlett ducked underneath for the winning move. At the end of the first lap, Casey Cycle City-sponsored Bricky Hughes on a Honda, Mark IV rider Roland King on a KTM, and Marty's Cycle Sales owner Marty Hensley on a CanAm found themselves at the front of the 250cc class. During the second lap, King dropped orr the pace to founh while Honda rider Bob Gerken forged from a mid-pack start into second and then up to the front 011 the next loop. While Gerken and Hughes bashed bars at the top, Hensley saw his chances fall by the wayside with a flat tire. As Hensley pulled into the pits for repairs, he exclaimed, "This course is great! I'm out of contention but I'm going to fix thi £Iat and go back out and continue having fun:' With Gerken holding on to take the class win, Hughes followed closely for second while King lid into third. After leading the 200cc class for four lap, Bare Bros. Kawasaki rider Chris RatliU watcl1ed his chances for the victory and a possible overall evaporate as he sat on the side of the trail with a derailed chain. With Ratliff out of the race, Mark IV Kawasaki-sponsored Ricky Hilton turned his fast and smooth riding style into a class win and second overall. Behind him, a trio of riders fought over second with Rick Pi no, Joel Burgess and Harold Cooke running only seconds apart to finish in that order. As the 125cc class riders pulled away on the start, several overly anxious riders were left on the ground. Meridian Honda-sponsored Steve Gen ler was cookin' a he brough t the rest of the pack around for the first lap. But unfortunately, his engine ended up "well done" on the second lap and last y(\aT;S, Gias champ.,j.e££ 18240 So.
