Ward leads Johnson during the first 500cc moto. The two riders traded position five times in one lap with Johnson taking the moto win. andseuingafter Moore. While Bowen chased Moore. Brooks and Leisk were going at it. Brooks eventually dove 10 the inside in a right hand sweeper turn and held onto fifth for another lap before Lei k retaliated. It wasn't until the sixth lap when Bowen found the hot line around Moore for third and started closing on Ryan. The Yamaha rider charged after the Randy Mamola-sponsored Ryan, and pas ed him two laps later. but Bowen found a large gap between himself and Warren - one hecouldn't dent. Moore, who's back from competing in Europe during the 125cc GPs, had reeled in Ryan but was feeling heavy pressure from Leisk. The three bauled inches apart. Finally, Moore made his move but it backfired when he tried an out ide line by Ryan in a sweeper. Ryan drifted wide and the twO lOuched and got out of shape. Leisk aw his chance and snuck by both riders in one move. Shortly after that, Moore's uzuki started to run sour as Brooks closed in. Brooks passed Moore, who eventually had to drop out with a seized motor. (Moore's bike also seized in the second molO while running midpack). Warren easily cruised home for the molO win, while Bowen finished second, closely pursued by Leisk. Dymond worked his way up 10 fourth, while Suzuki's Erik Kehoe and George Holland made up for poor starts to finish fifth and sixth. Seventh went to Ryan, while Brooks, Myerscough and Guy Cooper rounded out the top 10. The second moto saw Warren come back again and take the holeshot, closely pursued by Myerscough and his Yamaha. After Myerscough fol· ,lowed Ryan, Ronnie Tichenor (Kawasaki), Holland, Keith Turpin (Honda), Dymond and Leisk. Both Warren and Myerscough quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack, while Ryan held down third and Dymond worked his way up. By the third lap, Warren slightly pulled away from ~yerscough, ,. 1 then I J 11 \, ) hal wa through 't e-moto, Myers· cough started 10 reel Warren back in, while Dymond slid by Ryan for third. Dymond hooked up and slowly, but urely, reeled in Myerscough and Warren. With seven laps to go, Warren, Myerscough and Dymond were only a few bike lengths apart. The three-way dogfight for the lead was intense. while Lei k watched from a distant fourth as Holland cruised in fifth. Bowen, who started the moto at midpack, was having a hard time handling the dust and couldn't pass, then began having bike problems when the ignition started to fail. Kehoe began the moto in 12th and eventually worked up to seventh. On the last lap, with one turn to go, Dymond made his move on Myers· cough. Dymond out-distanced Myerscough over an uphill jump but went too wide in the final turn, a few yards from the checkered flag. Myerscough quared off the right hand turn and dove to the inside of Dymond, beating the Honda rider by a half bike length at the finish line. Finishing a few feet ahead of them both wa Warren. collecting his second career ational win. Leisk finished fourth ahead of Holland. "I tried to pass Myerscough going into the turn," said Dymond. '" went to the inside of him, but' didn't get on the brakes hard enough. , hit a braking bump and coasted on the front wheel a little too far. Myerscough's really smart, and he really made a good move and got back by me." '" knew he (Dymond) was com· ing," said Myerscough, "but' never looked back. , figured I'd try not to make any mistakes, because , felt preuy comfortable out there and wasn't really riding over my head. , felt he's just going to have try to get by me. At the end, , LOok a different line on the of[ camber than' was normally laking. , decided to sweep on theoutside. Well, heset me up and took me on Ihe jump.
