Although torrential rains were in the area the speedway track "'(as its usual dry self and continued it's no rainout Lradition with weekly speedway racing. The main involved some new riders. Bruce Nelson was in Canada contesting LheCanadian National Championship and Lhe consistent Lazor missed transrerring out or his heat race after nipping Mark Edwards' rear wheel and high-siding il. This gave Watson, Nabinger and the two other contenders Mike Buman and John Lewis their shot at the check· ered. Watson made no bones about it and shot out or the third spot into turn one. Buman, having the night or his lire, began to pressure Watson on lap three but Watson' rebuilt Weslake was tOO strong, as he pulled away to the rinish. Buman wound up second with Lewis third and Nabinger fourth. Lazor came off the 50 yard line to win the Handicap main event. It' been a handicap dry spell for Lazor and coming from the 50 didn't make things any easier, but aboard his Jawa, he picked orr one rider each lap. Hugging Lhe pipe and gelling excellent drive down the sLraights, he took Mark Edwards on lap one then moved up to fourth on .Iap two, as Len McBride went down 10 turn two. ~c JGI:IR-uw~S mance or McBride Lhe next lap giving Lazor third. Then he rollowed Watson inside of three lap leader Damien Cornwell on.Lhe fourth lap and rinally on lap rive made an inside move on Watson ror the win. Damien Cornwell has not rared too well in recent weeks in Division Two racing, but it look~ as if Lhings might be coming togeLher ror Lhe 14'yearold, as he pushed his Godden to a win over Dan Slick, Chris Ruddy and Floyd Clark. Arter two restarts, the main got underway. Cornwell was out or the gates rirst and dove into turn one in the lead. Dan Slick, who's been particularly impressive as or late, Lried to make a charge but Cornwell is always smooth when he's out fronl. Results DIV ONE: T. Steve Watson (Wes): 2. Mike Buman (Gdn); 3. I Points for the 1987 ational Championship Qualifiers opend hOC F . e at t e range ounty augrounds Friday nigh t and 1986 high point rider Mike Faria immediately jumped into the lead. John Cook, making a visit from northern California, came out or the Lhird gate and raced into second over Chrisco and Andy NorLhrup. Chrisco dropped to the inside and relegated Cook to third on the back chute and then he went about the job of catching Faria. Riding a brand new Weslake, Chrisco was getting a good drive off Lhecorners and hecaught up to Faria and Lried to force his way by on the inside, but Faria was able to fend off all of hi challengers' advances and on the final go'round he opened his lead to a Lhree length bulge. Even Lhough he was being plagued by loose vaJves, Jeff Jones (California Customs/Kal-Gard/Lazer Helmets/ Gunnar Gassers Weslake) won his Handicap heat from the 20-yard line. He then backed up that win with victories in both his heat and the main event. In the main Jones beat Tufr McBride of[ the line and proceeded to run away rrom the pack. Robert "Gater" Pretzing wen t to the outside on the start and seemed to be making some progress, but he lost his drive and drifted to the back or the pack. McBride had his hands [ull holding off the advances of Correy and Chrisco, but he did a fine job and took Lhe runnerup spot far behind the victorious Jones. Jim O'Dell (MAD Racing/Jarvis Physical Therapy/Silkolene/Answer Products/Frame Shop Jawa) forcefully moved riders out or his way in both his heat and the Second Division main event. His reward was the win in Lhe main over Don Butler and Dave Calais. Kelly Inman (STP/Gene Woods/ Mom & Dad Godden) won the redflag-shortened Third Division main over Valerie Robledo and Duane "Pinky" Blake. The red was caused by a multi-rider pileup that saw Robledo moved to the hospital with a severely gashed leg. Results SCRATCH: T. Mike Faria (Jowl: 2. Keith Chrisco (Wes); 3. John Cool< (Wes). Sizemore scores atlMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDI 0, CA, JULY 30 Young northern California ace Jim Sizemore made the long drive down to Inland Motorcycle Speedway Wednesday and he made a big impression on the souLhern California fans by taking the win in the Han9icap main by a half bike length over local favorite "Flyin' Mike" Faria. Faria was not outdone Lhough as he pocketed the big money by winning Lhe very conLroversiaJ Scratch main event. Faria's (Shoei/Carlisle/Hi-Pointi Cody Products/George Wenn Jawa) Lriumph was hi sevenLh of Lhe year at IMS and to say the least he had to work hard for it. Rob Pfeuing was the Eirstto react to the rise of the tapes rrom his number four starting spot, but Faria was the rirst rider to arrive in turn one. Shawn McConnell was right behind Faria and by the time the first revolution had ended McConnen round himself in the point position.
