with one of our trials bikes. so maybe we appreciate it more than most peo· pie when we do. Thanks also for your continued fine coverage of trials both here and abroad. The trials legion may be relatively small, but we're a dedicated and enthusiastic bunch! Thanks again for your support. RICH BROOKS Cosmpolitan Motors. Inc. Hatboro, PA Criminal neglect In California, a woman leaves her twO children in a car for 20 minutes on a hot day and they die. It is termed criminal neglect. and she is charged with mansla ughter or something and arrested. In Florida, parents allow their child to ride an ATV on a public road. The child drives in front of an 18-wheeler that has the right of way and can't SLOp. The child also dies. Are the parents charged with neglect? No, they sue and are given a $12 million award from the ATV maker. Draw your own conclusions. ART FRIEDMAN Santa Monica, CA Art Friedman is the Editor of Motorcyclist magazine . .. Editor. Crammed recreation California's Alan Cranston's letter. as published in the July 23. issue of Cycle News, contained an interesting figure of 4.6 million acres proposed to be "left over" from S2061. the "Desert Protection Act of 1986." That 4.6 million acres would be equivalent to an area 84.8 miles square into which would be crammed all hunting, mining. grazing and motorized recreation! Hell of a deal. Right now what's left of the open desert is as much your responsibility as the "environmentalists" or any other special interest group, and what you do with it or about it will probably be remembered by posterity. HARV STUSKA Denver. CO Eddie an In re rence LO your article of July 16 "Randy Mamola, Giving 100% and More," there are a few points that I would like to have cleared up: Given the fact that Randy Mamola says "I beat Eddie (Lawson) on sheer ability ...... I would like to know if Randy has been letting Eddie win so he (Randy) can pace himself or is he just a good sport and wants to see Eddie be World Champion again because they're friends? I do realize that Mr. Mamola beat Eddie in Spa. Belgium. but I do not attribute that to Randy Mamola's ability. rather I look at·thatas conservative, smart racing on Eddie's behalf (being 13 points ahead of Randy. the necessity LO win that race, in the pouring rain, was not as great as the necessity to finish second and remain 10 points ahead in the standings). Randy. sorry LO say. but when people think of Yamaha at the end of this year they'llthink of the World Champion - looking at the odds, I think the name Eddie Lawson is a safe bel.
