Eckert, Hartley win Richmond DT By Joe Kelly RICHMOND, VA, JULY 30 The torrential storm-like rains washed out the Virginia State Fairground's short track action two weeks back, but the q uartermile clay oval track in Richmond was in excellent condition as the 59rider, three-state field took to it today. Wayne Eckert showed his winning ways were still with him as he held ·oU the peristent challenges of David Nuckols and Doug Elliott in the qualifying heats. Nuckols ran second in the first heat while Elliott had the bridesmaid position in the second. The main was a classic battle between all three as Elliott led briefly oU the line, but Eckert had the lead before the first lap was complete. Nuckols then went to the outside of both front runners. He rode the high line until he took second on the fifth lap. Elliott passed back around on the next lap, and made a concentrated eUon to get by on the outside. The eighth lap had the large spectator crowd on their feet as the threesome rode three abreast. Nuckols squeezed by for second on the ninth lap and Elliott tried one more serious charge that failed and carried him down andouton the final lap. The Pro 250cc riders had split qualifying heats with an over abundance of riders. First year Pro, Ray West, put his Kawasaki in command at the turn of the light in the first heat and Roben Lewis and Billy Ellis gave him all the race he wanted the entire distance. Camel Pro contender Mark Hanley led the field in the second heat, buthe had a strongchaJlenge from Chris Rickman and Glenn Baar. On the third lap Baar worked by Rickman and then got a wheel inside Harley on the last lap to take his first Pro qualifying victory. West went to the front at the tum of the light in the main, but Roben Lewis shot his Honda by on the inside on the second lap, carrying Mark Hanley into second. They had West all over them on his quest to regain the lead. At the haJfway mark West moved by Hanley and went to the outside of Lewis, mak.ing it work on the sixth lap. On the seventh lap Hartley also got by Lewis, but all three were still very close, and the lead was not firm until the checkered flag dropped on West. The 500cc Pro class had another full field with two heats to set the feature positions. Mark Hanley and Joey Perdue led the field in the first heat while Glenn Baar had a racelong tussle with Jerry Koris and Clayton Oliver for third. Ray West, Chris Rickman and Raben Lewis also had a 'race-Iong war for the win in the second qualifier·, but it was settled at the £lag by West. Joe Perdue led the parade at the stan of the main with Mark Hartley, Glenn Saar and Ray West shu£fling for spots on his rear whelll. On the ~ third lap West took third from Baar and set up a charge to move by the pace setters. Coming out of the founh turn on the sixth lap Hanley made an in ide rocket launch that carried him past the sliding Perdue; West was also close. The three stayed together for the final laps, and Perdue made a pass attempt that fell shan as they came to the nag. m(.0 Results 00 0') 125: 1. Wayne Eckert (Yam); 2. C\r rLJ = b£l = < Sheldon tops Summit Point Historic RR By Lynford Garland SUMMIT POINT;WV, JULY 25 The fourth race of the 1986 AMA Historic Cup Series had a small field of vintage bikes, but the quality of the machines made up for any lack in quantity. The field included a 1936 Rudge, 1947 Manx Norton and a 1968 MV Agusta, all lurning in credible race performances. AMA Historic Cup races are hosted by the AMACCS and the vinlage entrants can practice with the modem bikes or can take advantage of special praclice sessions for classic bikes only. This syslem provides plenty of practice time and eliminates the hazards of combining FZ600s and tank-shifllndians on the track al the same time. The historic machines also race separately from the modem classes. Ted Hubbardon on a BSA B-50 led Saturday's combined-lighlweighl evemclosely followed by FranJc. Smith, Cyclesmilh BMW, also on a B-50. Smith took the lead when lhe ignition points on Hubbard's machine broke, slowing him to third place. Greg Wills, 441 Victor, took second in lhe Vintage "C" class. Bultacomounted Lewis Sheldon led the Lightweight GP race with Lou's Leathers' Lou Snedden on a Ducati second. Mark Samuelson on a 1947 long-stroke Manx took first place in Pre-1950 with second going to Beno ROOi on his 1938 BSA. Beno was riding the 1938 machine so he could also be scored in the Pre-l940class, which he won wi th I.,arry Feece on the 1936 Rudge collecting second place points. The Rudge, racing out ofthe Antique Motorcycle Museum in Angola, Idaho, slowed and then stopped lale in the race. Feece did three laps althe Isle of Man in 1984 on the bike and said lhal the engine probably overheated. The Rudge was lurning very credible lap times before lhe problem. On Sunday, Frank Shockley's Triumph lwin ran away wilh the Formula 750 and Vintage "C" Heavyweight race. Beno Rodi was second on his Gold Star and Charles Kalko third on the MV Agusta. Mark Samuelson's Goldie led a BSA sweep of lhe 500cc Premier class. Bill Lindsay on a BSA Wasp twin was second and Ted Hubbard on his B-50 took third. • Results UGHTWT GP: 1. L Sheldon (Bull; 2. L.
