S-frong muscles to Sidewinder TT win By Clay Light 25 National number 26 Kirk Strong stormed to the win in the 20-lap Expert main evem at round five of the AMA Western CLACKAMAS, OR, JULY Regional Championship Series held at Oregon idewinders Clubgrounds in Clackamas. A pur e of $5000 was up for grabs, including SIOOO dollar for the Expert win. Also lining up with Strong on the victory podium were junior winner jim Harrell and Troy Norris, the Pro-Am victor. Time trials opened up the evening's program with Strong stopping the clocks with a 14.67 on the Lynwood Cycles/Megacycle Honda 600 followed by National number holders Mickey Fay (14.73), Randy Green (14.76) and jeffrey Harsha (14.68) which represented the four Expert trophy dash contestants in the three-lap dash won by Strong over Fay. junior fast timer setter was A.j. Eschwig (Honda), posting a 15.09 while Harrell (15.12), Tim Stults (15.19) and Daren Arnold (15.24) followed. Eschwig won the junior trophy dash and Norris took the Pro-Am division. Heat winners included Fay, winner of heat one in Expert preliminaries, Green in the second heat and Strong in the third and final heat after nabbig Californian Sal Hoffman. The largest assembly of juniors in several seasons (33) also ran three heats with Eschwig, Stults and Harrell picking up wins. Pro-Am riders numbered 24 for three heats, won by David Ayers (Harley-Davidson), Don Paul (Honda) and Norris, also Honda-mounted. Sixteen juniors lined up for a single semi in which only three riders would gain tickets to the l2-rider final. Idaho's Rod Reynolds, Oregon's Bob Klum and Californian Bruce johnson were first through third. The most exciting semi was the Experts clash. Don Wilson led start to finish with Randy Roose nabbing second ahead of a wheel-to-wheel duel between Marty Zirbel and Ryan Fisher. Fisher nabbed Zirbel across the finish line to nab the final spot in the Expert main. The Pro-Am main event saw Ayers siuing the pole position on the Aero Lac/DeVol Engineering Rotax 500, but at the flash of the green light signaling the start orris nabbed the lead into turn one on the T&D Honda ollowed by Ayers, Canadian Steve seltine and Paul. Ayers grabbed the ead back coming out of turn two and as joined by Norris. The duo put a uge lead over Aseltine, who was aking his debut at the facility and as holding off Troy Yeo (Honda) nd Tom ewman (Rotax). Ayers aw Norris rally on lap seven in the O-Iap main and watched in horror as he Idaho speedster swept past the ominant Pro-Am rider for the lead o the finish by two bike lengths. vers held on to a close second with seltine nabbing third ahead of Caliornian Craig johnson (Rotax), who arne from last to nab Paul for fourth. Harrell hauled into the lead on the pening lap of junior competition ollowed by Stults, Eschwig and one f many, many Californians to venure north, P.]. Sanchez. Eschwig icked off Stults on the fifth of 12 aps and set out after leader Harrell, ho was riding impressively. Harrell njoyed a four-second lead until Eschig reeled in the Rotax-mounted ider.
