despite two long lap due LO fuel problems. Dropping from second to fifth on the second lap, Pat Prosser finished fifth with a pair of very raw hands. "The grips I used are definitely not the hot set-up!" he said. Open bikes were though, as the best finish a 250 could muster was sixth overall, with the 250cc Expert win going LO Todd johnson on the Casa Grande Suzuki-backed RM250. He was 26 minutes behind Dircks. Drey Dircks almost had the 250cc win, leading until three miles from the finish where his bike threw a rod. The tough course only let three 250cc Experts finish, and the 200s stayed home. In the three-lap divisions, Open Amateur Bill Watkins was first overall on his CMTIBernie;s East Valley/ ERC KTM with a 36.12 mph average. Robert Chadwick and Larry jones, both on Honda 250s, had a good battle for the 30+ Senior Veteran win with the nod going to Chadwick. For the day 60.9% of the racers finished this event sponsored by Casebeer Motocross Team. Results Gary Dircks (47) led from start-to-finish in the Cinder Mountain 100 in Flagstaff. Arizona on his Honda CR500. a distant second with Oxley and Sweaney rounding out the field. Oxley (Coors/International Speedway, Inc.lScoll Goggles/KNAC-FM/ Silkolene Weslake) dominated the Handicap action and he gave a riding lesson in the main event. Oxley was off the 30 while Mike Faria was off the 40 and they were knifing their way through the pack. They sandwiched Cary Faas with Oxley going through on the inside for second on lap two. As they came off turn four on lap three, Faria and Oxley swarmed on and raced past Denver, Colorado's Ken Pieper for the first two positions. Oxley then had LO hold off the charging Faria for the final two circuits. but he was more than equal to the task and he bagged a very popular win with the fans over Faria and an impressive looking Pieper. jon Boyer (Team Boggio/Sam Ermolenko Weslake) scored a sixlength victory over Ken Berry LO win the honors in Division Two while rookie Tony Bienert (Jawa) won the Third Division main in his first ever IMS appearance. Mark Key of Stockton returned to the winner's circle this week in the Pro-Am main event by taking first place honors ahead of P.). Sanchez and Craig johnson, both from Salinas. Last week's winner Sal Hoffman fell in his heat race, bringing out the red £lag. AMA rules state that any rider causing a red £lag will not be alIowed to restart, so even though Hoffman was unhurt he was not permilled to continue and consequently did not go to the main event. Some of the closest and most exciting races took place in the Mini ranks. john MitchelI of Ceres had been a consistent winner in the 60cc class and LOnight was no different as he fought a close ballle in every lap of the main event, taking the vicLOry by less than a bikelength. Vernon Dupree used his Klemm Research Honda to win the 80cc Novices ahead of hardcharging Norman Brooks of Newcastle. Dupree has worked hard this season to improve his skills and things finalIy seem to be coming together for the young rider. Tommy Knight was again the number one guy in the 500cc junior class. Knight does some amazing things aboard an Open class YZ moLOcrosser. Should he ever get his hands on a fast, full-blown flat tracker he is going to be one LOugh CUSLOmer. Paul Polhemus rode LO victory once again in the 250cc Novice class. as did An MitchelI in the 500cc Novice. Results PRO·AM: 1. Mark Key; 2. Pat Sanchez; 3. Craig Johnson. 250 JR: 1. Jemie AQuilar. . Sandona on fop in San Bernardino Speedway By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, jULY 24 Popular John Sandona of Reche Canyon, California won his first Scratch main event atJohn LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway in nearly two years on a chilly, damp southern California night. Sandona (Middle Eanh Video/MAlcolm Smith/Scoll Goggles/Rocky Cycle/Gene Woods Racing Products Weslake) came into the main without a win on the night and one of his competitors was "Rad Brad" Oxley, who was a perfea five for five. Sandona got the first break when he drew the pole and Oxley ended up pulling the number three slot. The remainder of the field was made up of Gary Hicks out of two and Rich Sweaney out of four. Sandona LOok the lead at the rise of the tapes and never looked back. Hicks and Oxley went wide in the first bend and they pushed Sweaney all the wav out to the wall and that ended his chances, but it also ruined the chances of Oxley and Hicks. Sandona was hooked up and pUlling the power to the ground. The win went LO Sandona who crossed the line while doing a big wheelie. Hicks was Scottsdale's Gary Dircks was worried Saturday afternoon; his 250cc Honda just wouldn't run clean no matter how he set the carburetor for the high altitude of the Cinder Mountain 100 race course. But Dircks' sponsor, Sunnyslope Honda, pulled a CR500 out of its sleeve, and Dircks found himself the overall and Open Expert winner of the ADRA's Fifth Annual Cinder Mountain 100. Although points leader Mike Powers bragged'he had a secret weapon to guarantee a holeshOl at the five-bikesevery-30 seconds stan, Dircks said he must've "caught 'em napping" because he was first out of the gate and led the race throughout, finishing his 152-mile run through Coconino National Forest's Black Cinder Hills in 3:43:22 to average 38.68 mph on a course punctuated by mile after mile of supercross-style whoops. Garth Sweetland, not happy with how his 500 was running Saturday, switched to his back-up 400 but had ignition troubles before Check One and failed to complete a lap for his second DNF of the series. Powers, who picked up $500 Saturday afternoon in the ADRA Pit Crew Challenge by narrowly beating the always-quick Sweetland effort, must have greased his axle a little too well as he lost an axle nut not too far off the stan. He was able to limp into the pits. but lost so much time that Dircks lapped him and Powers took home his first DNF of the series. He still leads Sweetland by 65 points, however. In at second overall and second Open Expert was Broomfield, Colorado'sjim Thompson, the 1984 champ, 8:26 behind Dircks after a long last lap. Up until then he'd run about four minutes behind the leader. Fifth after one lap, Paul Bennell moved into_third on lap two and finished there, although he was beginning LO reel-in Thompson. jeff Darland was founh for the duration Results Roper fakes laguna Vintage win By Michael Green MONTEREY, CA, JULY 12 The N issan 200 AMA National Road Race weekend held at Laguna Seca Raceway played bost to a number of races, including round four of the California Vintage Racing Group's Championship Vintage Series in which Team Obsolete's Dave Roper stormed to his first ever Laguna Seca win and his second AMA National Vintage victory in as many west coast races aboard his 500cc G50 Matchless single. The Hap jonesl Avon Tires Ducati 250 of Mike Green took his first 1986 West Coast 250cc AMA National Vintage win since winning the Lightweight-2 event at Daytona this past March.
