CA, JULY 20 Jim Vreeke rode his Kerker-sponsored Yamaha FZ750 to victory in both feature races at Willow Springs International Raceway, winning the Formula USA race and the Kerker Superbike race, Texas Hyperformance-sponsored Doug Polen was second in both events, with Doug Toland third in 16 Formula USA and jeff Stern third in Kerker action. Polen won both rounds of the Suzuki GSXR Cup Series. Open Production and 750cc Production, and finished a c1ose-and-dosing second to Ben Williams in the Honda VF500 Interceptor race. Polen's wins started out in 750cc Stock Production, an eight-lap race which he won by a margin of two seconds over Richard Moore. Toland, coming up from a poor start, went from fifth to third and was gaining slowly, but finished third another two seconds behind Moore. But the action in the race was up from. when Polen and early leader Don Canet came close to colliding in turn one on the sixth of eight laps, Polen diving underneath Canet at the entrance of turn one, getting in too hot and drifting wide, across Canet's front wheel; Canet rolled off the gas, pulled it back down underneath Polen and rolled on the throttle, repassing Polen before losing the rear end, sliding - and high-siding into the dirt outside the track. In the VF500 Interceptor race, Polen came from sixth to third, got in a big slide in turn four with two laps left in . the race, dropped back to sixth, and charged into second on the last twO laps. He lost to Williams by a few feet at the finish line. Last month's winner, joe Solis, was third with for- merly unbeatable Billy DeBere fourth and Moore fifth. Polen credited his improved performance in the VF500F race to his switch from an oversize 160/60-18 Michelin Hi-Sport rear tire to a I!JO/ 70-18 Michelin Hi-Sport, and claimed a new, unofficial class lap record of I :35.0. Winner Williams credited sponsors Simi Valley Honda, ICRT Michelin and Shoei. Polen"s Open Stock Production win came down to a last-lap draft attempt by Chris Steward, whose Denny Fryer·tuned GSXRllOOwaseasily the fastest bike on the track; Steward came close but didn't get past Polen, who swerved on the straightaway to try to break Steward's draft. Independent watches got both Polen and Steward at high I:29s during the event, unofficially shattering the class lap record, with Polen a lOth faster. Vreeke's win in the Kerker Superbike race was a runaway from the slim field of seven bikes, the race itself being most notable in that Kerker/Dunlop/Spectro/ND/Cycle Racer-sponsored Vreeke ran 1:295 on his 750cc Yamaha the entire eight laps, his best being a I:29.2. Polen finished second on his Swuki GSXR750 Limited Edition AMA Superbike. Polen jumped into the Formula USA lead on his GSXRIIOO Swuki, with Earl Roloff. Vreeke and Toland just behind. But Toland motored his jim Labine-tuned Suzuki endurance bike past the other three on the front straight and dove imo turn one in front just as Vreeke passed Roloff for second. Roloff tried riding around Vreeke and Toland way outside in turn two but didn't make it by; Vreeke pulled alongside, outside Toland around sweeping turn eight, didn't make the pass, but drafted past into turn one to start the third lap. Roloff and Polen quickly passed Toland, too, as Toland slowed and lost ground. With two laps to go, Vreeke led Dean Mizdal (142) beat Bill Donovan (700) in 460CC Stock Production. Polen with Roloff third and Toland one second behind Roloff and two seconds behind Vreeke. In the last two laps, Toland made up half the distance to Vreeke. catching and passing Roloff to finish third. Canet won 600cc Stock Production. coming from an early fourth to catch and pass initial leader Steve Cardillo; Chuck Waychoff was second wilh jim jepsen third and Cardillo fourth, all on Yamahas.
