Roth mans Honda's Wayne Gardner and Dominque Sarron won the July 27 Suzuka Eight-Hour, round three of the World Championship Endurance Road Race Series, in Suzuka City, Japan, completing 192 laps. Gardner and Sarron beat the Austra· lian Marlboro Yamaha team of Mike Dowson and Kevin Magee by two laps. Third place went to Suzuki's team of Kevin Schwantz and Satoshi Tsujimoto with 189 laps. Team Lucky Strike Roberts' Kenny Robens and Mike Baldwin were in second place when Baldwin crashed their Yamaha. The official U.S. Trophy team in this year's International Six-Days Enduro to be held in Italy in September, will consjst of Husqvarna riders Lerry Roe~er, FriU Kadlec and Dave hrtram; Cagiva 125 rider Charles IiaIcomb; Can-Am's Geoff Ballard; and Honda's Chuck Miller. The four riders representing the U.S. on the Junior World Team will be Husqvarna's Fred Hoess, Randy Hawkins and Jeff Russell, and Honda rider Kurt Hough. The remaining 20 riders who qualified 10 ride the 1SD£ include Bob Bean, Reed Brig-hi, John Bruckbauer, Harley-Davidson Inc., the only U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, completed its plan to go public. The Milwaukee, Wisconsinbesed company sold 2.0 million shares of stock at $11 each and $70 million jn notes, increased from 1.43 million shares and $50 million in notes forecast earlier (Cycle News, June 111. Demand for Harley-Davidson was strong because the new issue went forward despite a sharp plunge in the overell stock market just as the offer hit the street. The company's ticker symbol is HOI. John Penton, owner of Hi-Point Racing Products, suffered severe injuries in a fall off a ladder in Amherst, Ohio, on July 16. Penton was listed in critical condition for several days as a result of a ruptured spleen, damaged liver, partially collapsed lung and broken ribs. ''I'm just glad I didn't break my back, because I want to ride the Colorado 500 this fall," said Penton, a legendary off-road rider and supporter of the sport. The AMA has made arrangements with Trans National Financial Services to allow AMA members to apply for a special MasterCard credit card; the card comes with the AMA logo and the words "American Motorcyclist Association member," is available with credit limits of $3600 or more, and has an annual renewal fee of $20. According to Can-Am's Jeff Smith, two-time Shasta Dam and Sun Valley AMA National Hare Scrambles winner and former ISDE rider Ron aylor is now an oUicial member of Team Can-Am, joining GeoU Ballard and Johnny Manin. In his debut ride for Can-Am, aylor finished fifth overall on a 500cc ASE at the Devils Ridge AMA National Hare Scrambles, July 20, in Sanfor-d, Nonh Carolina. The Rocky Mountain Tri.ls Association has scheduled the 17th Annual Ute Cup Trial for August 16-17 at Mount Rose, 20 miles west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The two-day observed trial is not open to Novice riders; entries close August 7. More information is available from 303/330-2923. Hard-riding Suzuki GSXR Cup star Doug Polen of Texas will have his shot at the big-time with a try-out ride on a Yoshimura Suzuki superbike at the Mid-Ohio Camel Pro Series road race August 3. If all goes well, Polen could join Kevin SchwanLZ on the Suzuki team. Motorcycling pioneer and AFM founder John Mclaughlin was seriously injured in a head-on motorcycle/pickup truck collision on a mountllin road in southern California July 14. Mclltughlin, 62, was riding his Kawasaki Ninja 600R home from the AMA Camel Pro Series Nissen 200 at lItguna Seca Raceway in the company of his son, former road recer Steve, 37, and a family friend when the accident occured ..Mclltughlin suffered a severely broken left arm, which remained parelyzed at presstime; his Kawaseki bounced beck from the impact into the path of son Steve's BMW K1 00, and Steve suffered cracked ribs in the resultIInt second crash. "I just made a mistllke, I guess" seid Mclltughlin. "The bed thing is I don't even know whet happened. I've got almost a million miles on motorcycles, so I guess thet's not too bed. I still love my sport, which I've been in for 50 years. The neat thing is getting hurt and finding out just who my friends are, hearing from all these people, being tIIken care of by motorcycle people and finding out just how g1'eat motOf'Cycle people are." Tahoe-Carson Speedway in Carson City, Nevada, home of weekly NASCAR racing, has started a summer season of evening motocross scheduled for every-other Friday night.
