Steve Hennan took third ahead of Maguire and Kuhn, who rode a great race moving through the pack for fifth. Kuhn's (1-5) was good for the overall. Team Green's Mike Jones grabbed the holeshot in the first 250cc Expen moto, taking a wire-to-wire w.jn over Mickey Kessler. Boyesen held on for third over Dave Wolfskill and Tommy Hurd. Mota two was another battle between Kessler and Jones. This time Kessler took the win and the overall. Jones finished second ahead of Boyesen, Wolfskill and Marc Costa. Results MINI JR: 1. Edge FAIRBANKS, AK, JULY 5-6 Fairbanks riders dominated round three of the Alaska State Motocross Championship Series held at Goose Island Raceway. The home-track advantage plus temperatures in the 9O"-range favored the Fairbanks squad of Erik Munson and Vernon Johnson. Both captured overall wins on both days in the I 25cc and 250cc Expen and Intermediate classes, respectively. , Munson has been the number one force in the series and this weekend was no different. Munson had to overcome bad stans in both of Saturday's l25cc Expen molOS plus a new challenger, Bruce Williams of New Mexico. Williams, on a private Kawasaki, grabbed both mota holeshots. Moto one found Williams with a IO-second lead over Kawasaki of Anchorage-sponsored Kelly Styles. Munson, the defending I 25cc ExpenState Champion, was in eighth place but was passing two to three riders a lap. It wasn't long until he was challenging Williams. Munson waited a lap and easily passed. Once in the clear he pulled a huge lead and cruised in for the win. Williams tired after being passed and Joe Good on a Suzuki MOlOrcycle Be Marine RM got by lO take second. Anchorage Cycle Salessponsored Kelly Butler also caught up to Williams, but couldn't pass before the checkered. Styles crashed during the race and finished ninth. The second moto was again a Williams' holeshot. The l6-year-old took off quickly while the more experienced riders paced themselves because of the heat and long mOlOS. Williams began tiring by the halfway mark and Munson caught up to pass. This time Williams really slowed. Munson won with Andy Workman on a Northern Power Spons Suzuki following in second. Styles ran with the lOp guys for a while, but faded to seventh by the mOlO end. Good played it safe and took second overall by finishing third. This made it a Suzuki sweep of the lOp three positions. Butler again finished fourth and fourth overall behind third overall Workman with a 5-3. Williams ended up fifth and fifth overall. Everyone is psyched out by Munson when he lines up on his Jim Stewart/Suzuki Motorcycle & Marine RM. Everyone except Ralph Blanchard. The Anchorage rider has given Munson fits all season long on· his Anchorage Cycle Sales Yamaha. The first 250cc Expen mota was no different as Blanchard puJIed the holeshot. Munson gOl another one of his patented bad stans and while working through the pack threw a chain. It sidelined him just long. enough for Blanchard to pull away. But Blanchard's teammate Butler gave chase and it wasn't long until the two tangled sending Blanchard down. Butler finished in first while Munson put on an incredible show to finish second. Blanchard could only muster a sixth. Blanchard took command of moto two with another holeshot with Butler and Munson right behind. The three riders pulled away from the rest of the pack until lap six when Blanchard overshot a corner allowing both of the riders by. Munson crossed the finish line first, but Blanchard was able to repass Butler before the molO'send. Williams pulled the holeshot in Sunday's first 125cc Expen malO. Munson was stuck in sixth behind Butler. Williams took it easier and held onto the lead until halfway when Munson passed. Good followed Munson and the trio finished in that order. MOlO two found Williams in the lead again, but Munson got a good start and on lap three flew past and then threw a chain again. Good passed Williams and with a long lead over Munson took the win and the overall viClOry. Munson finished second and second overall while Williams slowed to finish fourth. The 250cc Experts watched as Blanchard shot out into the lead. It was almost a repeat of day one with Butler and Munson in tow. Almost, because the difference was that Butler rode flawlessly. He passed Blanchard and with Munson right on his fender held on for the win. This was tbe only time all year Munson lost a moto without crashin'g or with a mechanical failure. Munson didn't like it so he won the overall by winning the second mota. He had to pass leader Blanchard who led until lap seven.
