Ryan again at Baylands By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JULY 16 Rick Ryan did itagain today as he won four motos in his four starts at Baylands Raceway Park. Some factory should grab this rider as he is fI uid to me point of minimal energy expendiwre, he is cagey, careful, entertaining and fearless: h has been diHicuh for Baylands regulars in mat Ryan has grabbed first place payoutS for weeks on end, but they have profited by seeing just what he does mat enables him to be so laSl. In fact, several Baylands regulars have improved lap times considerably. Slaying closest to Ryan on this evening was relative newcomer to Baylands, Kelly Andris in me 250cc class. Andris rides a Honda for Kiser Bros. Honda and Pro Circuit Racing: his two second places got him a second overall. ' There was added excitement in me 80cc Mini junior class for Pj-l Lubricants and the Pit Stop in Hollister submitted a certificate for the first non-trophy finisher. The certificate has been awarded several times this season, to a different class of Amateur rider each week. Tonight's recipient was Kenny Madden whose fourth place just missed gaining him a trophy. The hottest rider in mis class is recent motocross school graduate jon Nicolaus aboard his very quick KX Kawasaki sponsored by TUF Racing and D8cM Products. icolaus suffered an uncharacteristic fourth in me first moto, as Kenny Madden won it; in me second outing it was Madden who ran afoul of me difficuJt Baylands course and Nicolaus drew upon his motocross professors' teachings to lake the win. Faria scores Speedway USA win By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 19 The largest crowd of the season gathered at Speedway USA on a hot desert night and they watched as "F1yin '" Mike Faria won a close race in the Scratch main and as Warren Diem turned in a beautiful ride to capture top spot in the Handicap main. The Scratch main matched Faria against Ronnie Correy, Gene Woods and Louis Kossum. Faria (Shoei/ Carlisle Tires/Oilzall/George Wenn/ Cody Racing Products jawa) drew the pole and was off at the rise of the tapes ahead of Woods and Correy. Correyand Woods became embroiled in a great battle for the second spot. Correy was riding around the pipe while Woods chose the outside on tbe finely-prepared track. This battle was taking place just behind Faria and just ahead of Kossum as the field circled me track in a tight pack. Correy finally took command of second on the final lap, but he couldn't catch Faria who has me track lead in main event wins. The win went to Faria by a narrow margin over Correy, Woods and Kossum. Diem was sensational in the Handicap main after starting on the 30. The Pennsylvania native was behind jeff pringman and Doug Bowers when me event began, but he pas ed Bowers for second when he went inside as they went through turn four on me first lap. Diem (Diem CycLes/Scott's Cycles/Gene Woods Racing Products/Shoei/Bob Keech Speedway Videos Godden) then closed in on leader Springman on lap two. Diem then went to me outside at the beginning of lap three. He stayed there and it paid off as he took the lead from Springman at me end of the lap and went on to open it up all the way to the checkered £lag much to thedelight of the fans. jeff johnson and Faria both got past Springman on the final revolution to take the se ond and third place spots. Mark Brooks (Paintworks/jesus is Lord jawa) got on the Second Division half of the program as a reserve and went on to lake wins in his heat and me main event. Second spot to lance Newsome (323) leads Dennis Sperin (86) and Dustin Futral at Thunder Creek motocross in High Falls, Georgia. Brooks, who started on the 20, was SCOll Correy with Bentley Barrell, third. Wah Foster powered his jawa to the Divison Three victory over jim Rogin and Rob Hassay. Newsome awesome at Thunder Creek MX By Joe Underwood HIGH FALLS, GA, JULY 12 Lance Newsome out-classed an en tire Pro/Am I25cc field and was all alone as he thrilled the Thunder Creek MX spectators, Saturday nighl. Newsome rode with the Amateur field but declined to compete in the trophy competition. Newsome did accept the money for his spectacular, "Devil's Doubles," longest jump prize. Amateurs,Dustin Futral and Dennis Sperin kept up the pace in the I25cc class. Sperin finished 1-2men Futral came back strong after a second place to finish number one in the next moto to lake the overall. SCOll Purvis took almost uncontested back-to· back wins in both the 250cc and me Senior classes. Even mough virtuaJly uncontested events, he showed non-me-less an excellent display of riding ability. Johnny Dean worked out two Urstplace wins in the Mini Expert class. Then Dean went on to lake me number one spot in me first Senior Mini event, wim me number two spot c1oseIy contested by josh Pitts'. Trey Davis finished mird, while jimmy Bowers took fourth. In the second moto, while leading, Dean's rear tire went £Iat, then Davis in close third crashed hard, leaving Pitts to lake overall and Bowers the number two spol. Results 125: 1. Unfortunately the lead of Richards lasted 001 y one and a third laps as he crashed hard enough to have to be brought off the track by ambulance. Examination later showed that orthoscopic knee surgery wilJ be required to get him right again. jeff Pestana and his O'Neal VSAand Salinas Yamaha sponsored YZ inherited the lead and carried me point all me way to the checkers. In me second moto the youngcharger from Santa Cruz, jeff Wenger, put his KX Kawasaki out front early. He carried the responsibility easily and looked comfortable. Keeping the pressure on was me task that befell PeSlana and hedid just mal. A midair pass entering a tight, high-bermed left was what it took on the part of PestaTla to put the pass on Wenger. The pass was observed by jack Hulse, also Kawasaki-mounted, and nearly all thought he would try to duplicate it to get by Wenger. Hulse found that Wenger was slowing so a normal high-speed pass on the front straight was all mat he needed to lake over second place. The Veteran Masters class is aJ ways a well-attended class and the action is serious. Michael Alarcon on a rapid Honda out of Boulder Creek predicted mat he would get me holeshot and fulfilJed that prediction. n[ortunately, a lap and a half later Alarcon fell in approximately the same place as did Tony Richards. The six other riders in me class all avoided a collision and the rider who inherited the lead was recent frequent winner at Baylands, Duane Hughes. Hughes kept his CR in me lead all me way to the checkers. Alarson gOt back up and began an impressive charge to the front but fell again and ruined his first moto good performance. At the SlaT! of the second moto all eyes were trained on Alarcon and Hughe . Hughes got the beller drive off the line and beat the pack i the first corner.
