That source was third-year rider Rich Sweaney who gave Faria all that he could handle in the exciting four-lap race. Sweaney made his first-ever IMS main the previous week and in that one he passed current number three in the world Sam Ermolenko for the third spot. This time Sweaney not only had to contend with Faria (Shoeil Oakley/CariisleTires/George Wennl Cody Racing Products Jawa) but defending National Champion Alan Christian and John Sandona were thrown in for good measure. Surely Sweaney couldn't repeat his feat of the previous Wednesday night. Faria rocketed oH the pole and into the point position in (ront o( Christian, Sandona and Sweaney. Suddenly Sweaney turned it on and he swept past both Sandonaand Christian. He then set his sights on Faria and he quickly began closing in. As they hit turn one (or the last time Sweaney was right on Faria's rear tire and he stayed there until they exited turn (our and headed (or the checkered flag. At ttlat point Faria got a good drive to score the win by three bikelengths. Sweaney took an impressive second with Sandona taking third. Louis Kossuth (NJKlLou's Servicel Smith Goggles Jawa) was electrifying on the Handicap side of the program as he captured all three o( his races inel uding the main event from the 10yard line. Kossuth led the event over Tim McCasland until the last lap. At that point 1985 Rookie o( the Year Jeff Johnson went inside McCasland (or second in tum two. Faria also raced past McCasland and then carried his momentum on and maneuvered inside Johl)son {or second at the checkered flag (ar behind winner Kossuth. Dynamic l6-year-old Billy Hamill (FOM/Team Swollen/J&J Jawa) again did his thing hy winning the Second Division heat race and main event (rom the zero yard line.
