Oehrle tops Mantua trials Bart Peterson, Chris Hughes and Steve Lombardo each collected three wins during Sunday's rainy sprints at Bryar Mo- By Royce Klein MANTUA, OH, JUNE 15 Steve Oehrle topped the Expen class at Trials, Inc.'s fifth event of the 1986 season and looks unbeatable in the race for the TI number one plate, having won all five events thus far_ Today he kept his scores for each of the five laps of the eight section course well into the single digits to finish with 26 points, less than haH of runner up Gene Dutiers 54 points. Rick Young snatched the third spot fron;J jeH Hursh on the last lap by posting hi.s best lap of the day turning a three-point disadvantage into a three-point advantage to finish with 63 points. In the Advanced class Bob Maxwell took top honors and has earned enough points to be promoted to the Expert class. Seventeen points behind Maxwell followed Bob Brown, who edged out Ric Kral by one point to finish with 68 points. Unpredictable weather led the organizers to layout an easier than normal event to allow ridable sections in the wet should the skies open up. This made riding perfection essential as a single five fon a section could drop a rider several places in the standings, as almost every section consisted of rocks. After the third lap only five points separated the four riders in the Intermediate class. jim Wilder held first place at that point followe<;l by Gary Stover, Dennis Street and Rick Manett. On the fourth lap, Stover pulled ahead with a six point score, the only single digit lap score in the class, pushing Wilder to second, while Street and Manett retained their third lap positions. On the final lap, Street turned in the best score, which moved him to second but could not overtake Stover, who remained in first. Wilder was thus dropped to third. In the 10 rider Novice class, competition was also very close with only eventual winner Doug Klein consistently holding his position. Riders in the next three places took turns holding second through fourth places. After the fourth lap, it was D. Klein in first with 22 points followed by Larry Klein 26 points, Ron Brenwald 27 points, and Caroll Conley 30 points. The stage was set for a climatic and nerve wracking last loop for these riders as a single unnecessary point could drop them a position or two. Conley pulled out all the stops to card a two point lap, his best of the day and one of the lbest in the class, only equaled on an early lap by D. Klein, which moved him into a tie for second with L. Klein and dropped Brenwald to fourth. The tie for second was broken in Conley's favor by his having only one more clean ride. The final scoreS were'D>Klein 27, Q:mley . - Peterson, Hughes, Lomb.ardo at Loudon RR By Larry Lawrence LOUDON. H, JULY 13 Jeff Vaughn captured two wins at the Smokey Mt. MX Regional on his Yamaha. Vaughn topped both the 250cc A and 250/0pen Pro-Am classes. torsports Park. Peterson was the most successful, in terms of money. He went home with $1200 thanks to his A, Band C Production wins aboard his Yamahas. Hughes brought out his powerful Yamaha FZ750 superbike and cleaned house in the A and B Superbike races as well as Formula One. Hughes' machine had so much motor that he would spin the rear whee! all the way up the hill on the back part of the course. Lombardo was smooth in his three wins on his Honda 500 Interceptor. He didn't look like he was going that fast, but a glance at the stop watch confirmed that Lombardo's wins were no fluke. . It started with Pahl taking over the. lead after Lee Lavely dropped out because of a mechanical failure. Pahl had the lead for a lap, but it was Spinneweber who was through the barrel first with'Pahl in second. Zatezalo was keeping a consistent third for these three laps, but on the next lap Zatezalo made his move from third to first, surprising Pahl and Spinneweber as they were bauling for the lead. So it was Zatezalo through first, Pahl second and Spinneweber third. Results NOV: 1. Guy Ron (Yam). 4-STRK; 1. ~ L Bennett (Yamt. 2. IYenTh0mpson (Han); 3. Kenneth Sola (Han). SR; I. Key takes Lodi Pro-Am By George Cooper LODI, CA, JULY 12 Mark Key, riding his potent Harley-Davidson, grabbed the holeshol at the start of the ProAm main event and led the race o Beaver Valley HS to Lojak By Curt Baronio BEAVER VALLEY, PA, JULY 6 Yamaha-mounted Stan Lojak took the overall win at the Beaver Valley Hare Scramble today but not without a fight by Barry Jeffries on his KTM. The first half of the race was led by jeffries with Lojak about a minute behind. By the haI£way point, jeffries and Lojak were exchanging the lead, but Lojak managed to pull away from jeffries and hold the lead for the rest of the race to take the overall win. There was a fierce battle between Steve Zatezalo, Tracy Spinneweber and Patrick Pahl in the Open'B ChlSS\· • to the finish. Key was clearly faster than the competition tonight at Lodi and except for the advances made by Rob Damron and Sal HoHman, he was never seriously challenged. Tonight's race was promoted by the Lodi Motorcycle CI ub, and marked a change from Stockton Motorcycle Cl ub's four previously run races. Both clubs have had to battle summer heat and evaporation in preparing the track, but in the end have put on very successful and exciting races. Rider participation has been excellent this year and tonight was no exception as over 140 en trees contested 15 classes. john Mitchell had to settle for second in the 60cc heat race, and as a result he came to the main motivated to win. Of( the line it was Mitchell and Martin Montes side-by-side through turns one and two. Down the backstraight Mitchell pulled Montes by a bikelength and then backed his Honda into turn three. It was a wheel-to-wheel battle until lap four when Montes took the high line in one and two in an attempt to go around theoutsideof Mitchell. It was a good try and it would have worked had not Mitchell realized what was happening and turned up the wick. At the finish it was Mitchell victorious in a hard fought battle. The 250cc Novice class must be one of the largest and most competitive classes in motorcycling regardless of the type and location of the racing. Lodi was no exception today as 17 riders signed up to battle for the gold. After three heats and semi, young Paul Polhemus emerged as the dominant rider. Polhemus returned to racing tonight after a four week layoH due to a broken collarbone, and appeared in excellent form winning his heat race convincingly. The main event was a closer contest as David Mosier pressed for the number one spot held by Polhemus. As hard as he tried, however, Mosier could not overcome the strong drives Polhemus was getting out of the turns, and Polhemus went on to win with Mosier taking second. Other action saw Matt Wait win the 80cc junior-Expen class, Tommy Knight ahead of Kevin Bricker in 500ccjunior, and Tim Woodward on top of a crash-marred 500cc Novice class. Results JR SPOWY: ,. MX By Susan Willian CLARKSVILLE, TN, JULY 5-6 Riders from Arizona to Canada converged on B&J Motocross to compete in the Last Chance Smokey Mountain AMA Amateur, Youth, Senior and Women's Regional Qualifier. Moto one of the 250cc A class saw Breck Powers out front, as Paul York charged by to take the lead. York took the checkered after being challenged by come-from-behind Billy Davis. Davis slid down taking the edge off of York but kept his second-place position, while jeff Vaughn worked his way to third around Mike Stallman. Davis stormed around the first turn in moto two with Powers second. Vaughn made a midair pass to go by Powers for second, then Powers crashed and dropped back to last.
