World Championship Trials: Round 9 Saunders awesome in Austria By John Dickinson HEINRICH, AUSTRIA. JULY 6 Steve Saunders continue,.d his charge for the World Trials Championship with a brilliant win in the Austrian round, the ninth round of the 12-event series and now stands just seven points behind Championship leader Eddy Lejeune. The Rothmans Honda pairing delivered a convincing onetwo to the rest of the world round hopefuls and with Spanish youngster jordi Tarres jamming his Beta between the Hondas and Thierry Michaud's Fantic on the day the title looks now to be a straight fight to the finish between Saunders and Lejeune. Saunders is definitely the rider they all have to beat at the moment; he's won the last two rounds and is brimming with confidence. The three lap, 16-section course at Heinrichs was marked out extremely tight with very long hazards which contained some impressive rock steps. Saunders revelled in the conditions and got off to a super start dropping just seven marks over the first five sections along with Michaud, while Lejeune couldn't believe his luck suffering three fives and taking a total of 19 marks over the same hazards. Lejeune recovered. though. and in fact led at the end of the opening circuit by one mark from defending champion Michaud. Saunders took them to the cleaners on the second lap with some phenominal riding and only Michaud and Italian sensation Diego Bosis could get anywhere near this score. At the end of the second lap, the event was hit by a tremendous thunderstorm, and what had been dry rock stream beds, suddenly became raging torrents. So bad was the light in the wooded sections that riders had their lights switched on in a vain attempt to illuminate the hazards. Saunders and Lejeune coped superbly with the change in conditions as did Tarres, who sneaked in from of Michaud in the final standings as the Frenchman wem to pieces on that final circuit. It was a better day for john Lampkin who weighed in with his first top With his win in Austria. British rider Steve Saunders tightens the points gap between himself and leader Eddy Lejeune to seven.
