them the transfer from the qualifier to the regional competition to be held at Steel City. The area AMA qualifier was held at MOIO Sport Trails in Malvern, Ohio. By the way, Rick Boepple, whom the story lead was about, went to the 'regional at Steel City. Rick crashed hard the first moto but was able 10 finish ninth. Overall, he grabbed the final transfer spot (eight) to advance him into the competition at Hurrican MiUs, Tennessee. The ironic thing is. that during the first-moto crash, Rick broke his leg. His family and friends wish him a speedy recovery so that he will be ready for the Amateur competition in mid-August. (.0 - 00 O'l America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Sharon CbYLOn. When we arrived I was shocked 10 see a 10m-up stock car track ~tih holes a motorcycle could never survive. Several riders, myself included, were not going to ride. If it has not been for the persistent track conditioning by referee AI Baker and his crew there would not have been a race at all. The races were late getting Slarted, but my hat is o£f 10 AI and his crew. Also, congratulations to Tim Mertens and Scott Adams for running 1-2 in . the Expert main. Chris Aitche5Oll. Kudos galore E..-nOftlce Kenworthy's GP Club would like 10 thank all the riders who supported our Budweiser National Pro-Am MX and our Youth Regional MX Qualifier. We set a record for participants at the Pro-Am with 475 riders on hand. We plan to make this an annual event. A special thanks goes out 10 Budweiser, lMA, and all the other sponsors and personnel that help make these races a success. I would also like to thank Tommy Watts, je£f Stanton, Mark Melton, and the rest of the riders for putting on a great show for a lot of first-time spectators. Finally, keep those letters and phone calls headed 10 the AMA and our dream of a pro National in Ohio will become a reality. .. 190 FirSI Av~ .• Tucker, GA. 30084; mailing address P.O. Box 805. Troy,OH Coliseum tragedy Now that we at SMC have filtered through the many reports arising out of the tragedy following our event, I'd like 10 comment. This senseless murder of a young person is terrible. SMC has petitioned the Coliseum and its Commissioners 10 address this serious problem before we stage another event at the Coliseum. . SMC will also explore and hope to implement bus programs where people can park out of the area and be bussed 10 the event when the legitimate capacity of the safe parking around the Coliseum is full. SMC has always strived to bring fans the best possible events, tracks and riders, but that also extends to doing all we can to protect their personal rights. MICHAEL F. GOODWI President Stadium MOlOrsports Laguna Hills, CA Singleton During 1980 and 1981 I prepared road racing motorcycles in Europe and the U.S. for twice Daytona winner Dale Singleton, who was a good friend and was just as .much missed here as in Georgia after that tragic air accident. Unfortunately, my memories of our successful U.S. Formula One Championship season in 1981 are not supported by any photographs of Dale, the team, or the Daytona-winningTZ750. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could make available any pholOgraphs or back issues of U.S. magazines containing pictures or aniclesof Dale's '81 Daytona or F-I wins for me to purchase. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer me. JOHN REDDING P.O. Box 69 East Ringwood, 3135 ViclOria Australia Editing error An error was made in the editing of an article which appeared in Cycle News, july 2, on page 49. The article and the caption under the accompanying picture (page 50) stated that the track was Steel City USA. In writing the article, I never mentioned Steel City. The only place that Steel City was listed was on the result sheets, where I had mentioned that the riders listed all qualified, earning I have received a reply from Senator Cranston; I did not support his bill S2061 and asked him to reverse his views. Although it only took three months for his reply, I doubt if he heard my message. His letter is carefully worded but no mention of a position change is made, nor do I get a feeling of trust from the response. The last paragraph ~,s the killer: "Please be assured ... I am assured the areas left open by his bill will be smaller, further away from home and crowded. The ORV owners want more areas, larger areas, more varied terrain and perhaps a training school to cut down on useless injury to beginners. This is not a California issue. This is it for everyone in every state, the tip of the iceberg so to speak. For half the cost of a new rear knobby you can send telegrams to both your Senators and Representative just by picking up your phone. I'm talking under $201 Also vote in November to unseat Cranston and all the Democrats on the House Government Operations Committee on Commerce, Consumer and Monetary Affairs who recommended a ban and recall on ATVs. Or wait until next year and try to get $20 for your ATV, dirt bike, trailer and gear combined. If you work with or own anything related to ORVs, including restaurants, motels, publishing, parts, ac-' cessories, or even a gas station near an ORVarea -look to your future now. HAYDEN HEAL Orange, CA Surratt's. Pro The june 7 L. A. Coliseum Supercross was a great show. I particularly enjoyed the finals of the 125cc Support class. It reaJIy i1lustrates the great pool of rising motocross competitors. They put on a great show and undoubtedly made the 250cc Pros a little nervous. Honda Support rider Wi1lie Surratt rode a great race and earned everyone's applause. But, I just learned today that Surratt received his award and purse and promptly contribued his entire purse to the Danny "Magoo" Chandler medical fund. Money is a scarce ingredient with all rising motocross competitors. For Surratt to make this gesture certainly shows a character rare in today's world. B.W.
