straight on lap two, then Kawasaki rider Terry Fowler moved Black another spot back on lap three when he secured fourth. As Davis pulled out to a seven-second lead over Campbell just before the halfway point, Fowler grabbed third from Simons. Davis maintained a good-sized lead to .the finish; Campbell was comfortably in second over Fowler and Simons. Wageman came back from his firstlap get-off to wind up fifth ahead of Robert Naughton, Manning and Team Swolen's Todd Peterson. Ty Davis rode smoothly and consistently on his way to the 250cc Moto- cross win at the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Gran Prix. Main Robert Naughton made a last-jump pass attempt. but wound up fourth. Brian Manley was within striking distance of Davis on the final lap. but crashed; he still finished second in the main. Mickey Thompson Off-Road Gran Prix Ty Davis wraps Coliseum win By Matt Hilgenberg Photos by Mitch Friedman LOS ANGELES, CA, JULY 19 Honda Support rider Ty Davis put his Malcolm Smith Products/PJI Oil/Terrycablebacked CR250R into the winner's circle at tonight's Mickey Thompson Off-Road Gran Prix in the Los Angele Memorial Coliseum. The 250cc Motocross class ran on a specially designed course that util zed pans of the regular MTGP car/ ATV track. Davis easily won his J a-lap heat race. then went wire-towire over Brian Manley in the eightlap main, which was shortened from 10 laps due to a late-running program. Over 52,800 spectators attended the night's event. Heats Seventeen riders lined-up for each la-lap heat, with the top eight from both heats transferring to the main. _Innovation Sports/Race Tech/ Yamaha USA rider Doug Dubach and Dave Miller were dead-even as they entered the first tight, left-hand turn to open heat one, but when Dubach stuffed to the inside, Miller went down, dropping to the back of the pack. Arizona's Drey Dircks inherited second behind Dubach, while Ian Fitz-Gibbon, Manley and Craig Canoy ran 3-5. Manley and Canoy moved past Fitz-Gibbon on lap two, and Manley closed on Dircks. Dircks swapped out and fell at the end of the long whoop section on lap three, handing the runner-up spot to Manley. Dircks rejoined the race in fifth, then passed Fitz-Gibbon for fourth during lap four. From there to the finish, positions held. Dubach lapped everyone up to fifth by the finish; Manley was a distance back in second, Canoy was a full straight behind Manley in third, and Dircks and FitzGibbon filled the top five. M-Star. rider Pete Murray, John McCaughar and Shawn Wynne also earned rides in the main. Davis holeshot heat race two, and was trailed out of the whoops by Jerry Black after Yamaha riders Scott Manning and Ru s Wageman crashed. KTM-mounted Todd Campbell passed Black for second before the end of lap one; Willy imons ran fourth. imons bagged third on the back- Davis nailed another holeshot in the eight-lap main evern over Dubach, who immediately crashed in the unevenly spaced whoops that took down many riders; he remounted in 12th and put on the charge of the night, ending up with third. Manning fell alongside Dubach on lap one, which gave Davis a little running room over Campbell and Manley. Manley put his Malcolm Smith Products/Dallas Baker Products Honda inlo second on lap two and set out after Davis. Campbell had problems on lap three and dropped to seventh; Wageman, Fowler and Dircks ran in the top five. Just after the halfway mark Manley began to slowly reel-in Davis, while Wageman dropped all the way back to seventh, pUlling Fowler, Naughton and Dircks third through fifth; Dubach ran sixth. On lap seven, Naughton passed Fowler for third on the backstraight, and Dubach bagged fifth from Dircks. As Davis and Manley began the last lap, they were well ahead of Naughton. Manley was just a couple bikelengths behind Davis as they emered the whoop section, but crashed exiting lhe whoops and heading onto the backstraight. He got up before Naughlon arrived on lhe scene, but smooth-riding Davis was on his way to a well-de erved win. Manley took a lonely second, while a fierce race was on for the show spot. Dubach edged ahead of Naughlon, and was a couple bjkelengths ahead one jump from the finish line. In an attempt to regain third, Naughton pinned it off the jump, but wound up half a wheel short; Dubach finished third. Fowler held on for fi.fth over Dircks. Results MAIN;'. TyDavis(Hon); 2.
