Strong beats Fay at Oregon TT By CI.ay light CLACKAMAS, OR, JUNE 27 Honda-mounted Kirk Strong stormed past fellow Northwest TT specialist Mickey Fay late in the 20-lap Expert main event to win round three of the AMA Western Regional Championship Series, held this week at Oregon Sidewinders Clubground in Clackamas. For his win, Strong took home a cool $1000, while Fay netted second pay ahead of John Wincewicz (Triumph). Donald Paul (Honda), David Ayers (Rotax) and Johnson pushed their way into the top three spots in the IO-Ia p Pro-Am final ahead of Honda 25Occ-mounted Kris Kiser, who came all the way from Kai Lue Kuna, Hawaii, and Troy Norris (Honda). Paul, Ayers and Johnson rode three abreast for the first six laps until Ayers went past Paul and held down the lead all to himself. Ayers got a scare with a lap to go when Johnson nabbed Paul and pulled within a wheel of a Regional victory. Ayers tucked to the inside for a narrow win with Johnson, Paul and Norris behind. The 12-lap Junior main event was crash-marred. It took many re-stans, but once underway for good it was Jim Arnold pushing into the lead followed by Californian Donnie Harrell (Rotax), Eschwig, Tim Stults (Honda), Robbie Blagg (Honda) and Larry Staggs (Wood Rotax). Arnold did a sensational job up front until the last lap when he gave Eschwig room to pass and was destined to finish in the number two spot. Eschwig took a jubilant win, which was his second Regional win in a row ahead of Arnold, Harrell, Stults, Blagg, Staggs and Bob Klum (Honda). Fay sat in tbe pole position for the 20-lap Expert main event. He grabbed the lead on lap one, but by lap two, had yielded to Strong on his Honda 600. By lap three, Fay was back out front and the lead changed back and forth until lap 16 when Strong stormed into the lead for keeps. Fay rode two bikelengths back of Strong, while a spectacular battle for third went on between Wincewicz, Duane Gerrard (Yamaha) and Wilson. Wincewicz charged from ninth La third after displacing Gerrard and pushed his Lou Kinish Triumph 750 across the line to edge out Gerrard by a wheel for third. Fifth went to Wilson followed by Zirbel and Californians Ben Zakarian (Honda) and Dan McDonnell (Harley-Davidson). Results EX: 1. Kirk Strong (Hon): 2. Mickey Fay (Hon): 3. John Wincewicz (Tri). Volk scores at Auburn Spdwy By Bill Spencer AUBURN, CA, JUNE 27 Combining his best night of Class A Speedway racing in some time, the Crown Prince of Team Vooch, John Yolk, rode his AXO special to the Handicap main event win at Friday night racing under the lights of the Gold Country Fairgrounds, while Paul Orlandi proved he still has what it takes by winning a big Scratch main. Scott Wes ie started OU'l the Handicap heats with a thriller by pas ing Gary Stewart on the outside, but he stayed out there too long and Jim Sisemore rode to the win. John Houston, Jr.. took home the win in the two over Bart Bast and Kid Curry. Sam Bast styled to the third heat win over Tom Ferris and a chasing Eddie Ingels while it was Mike Parsons the fourth heat winner, but just barely over Yolk and Volcano Kid Steve Martin in a real close third putting Mike Delacy in the pick-up for Handicap time. John Houston attacked the start of the first heat well and held a good point for the win after Gary Stewart bashed the fence real had. Bart Bast held off a hard charge from Jim Sisemore while Kid Curry and Orlandi· went off to the Consi. Martin and his MPE special got right to work in the second semi but couldn't get around Mike Parsons. Houston and Volk went right to work at the start of the main, but Houston crashed out of turn two with Volk taking over the slot from Parsons. Martin and Bart Bast then started to put on one of those shows that just makes for great watching. Martin paced the proper line with Bast on the attack, but with little room to work. A lap from the end, Bast made the move and went by with a s'light bump that referee Steve Ellerman didn't like and so placed the popular young race last. Volk easily took the win for the Mark Zeissler racing group while Martirl was scored second over Jim Sisemore. Marc Prince and the Napa Valley Yamaha/Harry's Shop special got the Scratch heats started with a bang with get off in the first lap while Steve Crawford also off and a match race for the transfers with Sisemore the winner over Sam Bast. Bart Bast gated from the pole in heat two for the win while Martin came off the wall for the second after Houston crashed. Pat Linn aced a pole shot show over Ingels' A & A Racing servi· ces special. A truly great scratch heat came in the final round with Mike Delacy right alongside of Orlandi. The two matched moves for the four laps with Delacy the winner. Sisemore got the crowd whipped up with a double pirouette off tum two in the first semi (luckily unhurt but out of the competition). Bart Bast won in a heated contest with Orfandi. Martin got the better shot in the second semi with Linn in for the last transfer. Pat Linn pulled the number one slot for the main event with Orlandi next to him and Martin just inside of Bast. At the gate, it was Linn lane leading over Martin and Orlandi. Bast took the serious task quickly and
