The july 13 British round of the World Championship 500cc MX Series saw Eric Geboers (Hon) and Georges jobe (Kaw) pick up an equal amount of points with 2-1 and 1-2 performances, respectively. David Thorpe (Hon) finished 3-4 and Kees van der Van (KTM) turned in a 4-3 day. Andre Malherbe (Hon) finished fifth in the first moto, but DNF the second. Thorpe leads Malherbe in the point standings, 257 to 247. Geboers is third with 244 points. The rained-out Narzareth (Pennsylvania) Half Mile round of the AMA Regional Championship Dirt Track Series has been rescheduled for August 9. not the date given in this section last week. An informed source tells us that Suzuki 's Bob Hannah and Erik Kehoe will contest the july 20 Unadilla (New York) 250cc MX GP aboard works bikes, as will several other Suzuki riders including, of course, GP circuit regular and Michele Rinaldi of Italy. The July 12 Hagerstown (Maryland) Half Mile round of the AMA Regional Championship Dirt Track Series saw Ronnie Jones (Hon) win the Expert final. Bryan Villella (W-R) top the Juniors. and Scott Stump (H-D) first across the finish line in the Pro-Am main event. Longtime Cycle News contributor Henny Ray Abrams spent the Fourth of july cruising New York's harbor aboard publishing tycoon Malcolm Forbes' new 151-foot yacht, the Highlander. Other guests included Dr. 8c Mrs. Henry Kissinger, Mr. 8c Mrs. David Rockefeller, Mr. 8c Mrs. Rupert Murdoch, Mrs. Douglas MacArthur and Mrs. Francois Mitterand. While impressed with the guest list, Abrams was most impressed with the other -modes of transponation carried aboard the Highlander. To quote from a brochure describing the yacht, "On board are a Bell jet Ranger III helicopter, two tenders - 19-foot Cigarette and a 23-foot Donzi - and two Harley-Davidson I 340cc 5-speed motorcycles. " Bob Lenk. eastern advertising manager of the AMA's American Motorcyclist magazine. tells us that prestige (per~ized)license tags are now available for motorcycles in the state of Georgia. Umited to five letters; the prestige tags cost an additional $25; application forms are available at Georgia DMV offices. Lank said. "Tell everyone not to bother applying for BSA. CS500. MB5. SR500 or LENK. I'vegotthosewrapped up." Credit for availability of the prestige tags goes to Georgia Gold Wing Club member Jerry Mills. who just happens to work for the Georgia state government. The Goodwill Games, which are currently being conducted in Russia and televised in the U.S. - mainly by Ted Turner's WTBS - include motoball, a form of soccer utilizing motorcycles. Texas has Cagiva North America introduced the Ducati 750 Paso to the press at Laguna Seca on July 10. The streamlined. 748cc V-twin street bike is scheduled to go on sale in January. 1987. for between $5800 and $6000. been cancelled due to problems obtaining liability insurance and instead will be held as a one-day event at Texas World Speedway in College Station. TexasonJuly27. nator Larry Griffis, Glover has been spending time in Sun Valley, Idaho, and will not resume racing until given a clean bill of health from his doctor. For the first time since 1909 HarleyDavidson does not have a dealership in Louisville, Kentucky. Last month Charlie Kuchenbrod retired and closed the doors of Harley-Davidson of Louisville, which had opened in 1909. Louisville metro area Harley riders are now being served at Thurrtall's Harley-Davidson in Clarksville, Indiana. The Iron Butt '86 around-the-U.S. motorcycle rally will leave Montgomeryville (Pennsylvania) Cycle Center at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. August 26 and will return at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. September 6. covering 8660 miles in the process. Checkpoints for the event wm be located in Portland. Maine; Eau Claire. Wisconsin; Seattle. Washington; Costa Mesa. California; Muskogee. Oklahoma; Jacksonville. Rorida and Montgomeryville. The $750 entry fee includes a $50 donation to the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon; 40 starters will be picked from the 60 applicants to date. County Board of Supervisors rejected Border Patrol objections and approved construction of a 426-acre. $25 million race track complex on the Mexican border at Otay Mesa. 20 miles from San Diego. The July 9 vote was 4-1 against a Border Patrol appeal of a county Planning Commission decision to grant the project a building permit. and represented the last approval hurdle faced by the track. being promoted by San Diego Motor Racing Associates. Border Patrol spokesmen opposing the track said it would make it easier for illegal immigrants to enter the U.S .• while proponents of the track said building in the area would discourage. not encourage. illegal immigration through the border fence. Veteran road racer and two-time Superbike lational winner john Bettencourt says that his 1986 sponsor, Crane Racing. folded after March's Daytona 200 and that he's looking for sponsorship help to continue his 1986 season. The week caps off with a pretty long triathlon. and I'm looking forward to a great time." 1985 500cc MX ational Champion Broc Glover is still out of action, due to a broken bone in hi right wrist. According to Yamaha team coordi- Cycle Tech Racing's joey Osowski and jeff Heino won the rain-shortened july 12 WERAIEBC National Endurance Road Racing Series event at Loudon, New Hampshire's Bryar Motor Sport Park, despite a crash during the first hour. Cycle Tech beat Ski-Haus Racing and Team Pro Motor II to take the win after five of the scheduled six hours. Team Hammer led through the second hour before encountering problems and losing 12 laps; the team finished II th, maintaining its points lead and collecting the first-place money in the season-halfway points fund payoff. Suzuki-mounted Terry Vance topped Steve Miles' Kawasaki and set a new E.T. record in the Pro Stock class at the 17th Annual NHRA Budwaiser Summernationals at Raceway Park in Englishtown. New Jersay. on July 13. Vance established the new record at 8.14. breaking his previous record of 8.16 seconds. Vance's fastest pass of waekend was 8.09. Rumors that DeAnza Cycle Park in Sunnymead, California, will close due to liability insurance problems are "untrue," according to DeAnza Racing Club's Ed Michetti. "DeAnza is open and is continuing its racing program as usual," Michetli said recently. DeAnza's next event will be july 20, California Vintage Racing Group- and SMX-promoted MX races. Continental's new Conti Blitz dirt track tire is now available and should make its debut at the July 19 Parkersburg (West Virginia) Half Mile round of the Camel Pro Series. The Blitz rear tire is 6.976 inches wide. making it the widest tire approved for AMA Pro dirt track racing. Continental claims that at 10 pounds. four ounces. the Blitz is over two pounds lighter than the equivalent Carlisle tire and exactly two pounds lighter than the equivalent Goodyear tire. A.A Racing Service of Redwood City. California. retails the Blitz front tire for $66 and the rear tire for $76. Rampant rumors that Cagiva North America. new owners of Husqvarna Motorcycle Company. will shut down Husqvarna warehouses around the country and close the company's national headquarters in San Diego. California are unfounded. according to new Husqvarna Vice President Alberto Carnelli. When asked by Cycle News if Cagiva plans to closa Husqvarna's offices or any warehouse facilities. Carnelli answered with a flat. "No." The 'offices and southern California warehouses of Husqvarna will. howaver. be relocated from San Diego to Los Angeles. according to a recent letter Carnelli sant to Husqvarna dealers. That move apperently will consolidate the headquarters for all of Cagiva's American holdings (Cagiva. Husqvarna and Ducati). at one Los Angeles location; neither the data of the move. nor the new location. have been announced. Cagiva officially took control of Husqvarna June 30.
