firsn>f the-douule wins of dre evening: • Shawn Wade put a slingshot start on the rest of the field in the 250cc final and stretched it to nearly a 10length lead by the third lap when his Honda dropped the shifter off on the backstretch. The combination of Wade running in fourth gear and Dana McNeil's Honda all the way into the corners with the power on put McNeil at the rear wheel of Wade by the time the white £lag £lew. The drive off of the fourth turn of the last lap went to Wade and he held off McNeil for the win. Dan Carter had followed McNeil up to take third and Larry Romboult was fourth. The Open class proved to be the rac~ 'of the evening. Greg Wagenknecht brought his Expert-ranked Honda to the track, that he's taken two Pro wins in as many races, and proved to the crowd why he is probably one of the top two riders in the Midwest this year, by holding off Audie Huff by a length to get the win. When it came time for the final, Waggy ripped into turn one in front of Reed Bertilino, Phil Jones and Huff, who had gonen out very slowly. The racing started in the back as Huff, turning laps in the low 27s, first moved by Jones, and then a lap later, got by Bertilino. On the third lap, Huff had moved within reach of Waggy and the battle began. For the next four laps, Waggy and Huff swapped the top spot and the remark was made that they could have been holding hands, they were so close. Coming into the third turn for the last time, Waggy's line at the top fo the groove gave OUI and Huff found good traction on the low groove, enough to pull even though the rest of turn four and take a wheel advantage coming onto the final straight. As they screamed toward the checkers, it was the motors turn to win it, but the match was even as Huff's 18-inch advantage proved to be just enough at the line.' * • v.n.b.. Hicks's fellow California rider,"Gene Gentsch, finished a wheel-length ahead of Hicks in the first moto and that kept him from taking the overall. Gentsch was third in the second moto for third overall. Jeff Dirago topped the local.riders with a 4-6 finish to take fourth overall. In the 250cc Expert class, John Thompson of New Jersey carved an overall out of 1-3 finishes as he and Rob McCullough passed each other four times in the last lap of the opening moto.
