A large turnou twas tri mmed down to eight qualifiers in Top Fuel and in round one Treu and his Kawasaki went through the traps behind Larry McBride's Suzuki, but the redlight meant the end of McBride's effort. Trell ran a 5.02 and McBride a 4.94. The second pairing on aturday saw John Sands' fuel-injected Honda outrun the ailing Kawasaki of Terry Kizer, 5.08 to 14.85. Mark Miller set low ET of the event with a 4.91 to top Jim Mangus' unique two-stroke, supercharged nitroburner which clocked a 6.24. Duke McDonald was beaten by Bobby Baker in the final round on Saturday after Baker turned a 5.0 on his turbocharged Kawasaki. On Sunday, rounds two and three were set LO be run and Treu knocked off Sands as the Honda-mounted pilot redlighted, 5.02 to 5.08. In the second semi, Miller blasted his way into the final against Trett by turning a 4.969 to top Baker's very close 5.052. Miller and Treu left together in the final, but Trett had tOO much and claimed the win with a 4.93 to Miller's 5.12. Perhaps the most remarkable performance of the even t was the first four-second eighth mile clocking by a carbureted gas-burning motorcycle without nitrous - the 4.941 turned in by eventual Funnybikewinner Steve Molitor and his Suzuki. Pro Stock fielded a tough bunch at Pocono and National Champion COSTA MESA, CA, JULY 4 Alan "Crazy" Christian continued his reign of terror at the Orange County Fairgrounds by taking home the victory in the Independence Cup before the smallest crowd in recent years a t the worldfamous oval. Many of the fans were apparently taking a little vacation over the holiday weekend or they were out at firework displays but not being at speedĀ· way they missed a text book demonstration of how to ride, put on by Christian. "Flyin'" Mike Faria, who won the race back in 1985, came out fa t and won event two when he bauled from the back of the pack to edge past "Rad" Brad Oxley at the line in a crowd-pleasing four-Iapper. Christian, who has now won the last four weeks in a row at Costa Mesa, easily defeated John Sandona to win eveDl three with Steve Lucero doing the same in event four to end round one. Shawn McConnell gave Christian sponsored by STP/CaI-Fab/Valvoline/Hi-Point/PBI on a Weslake, an early battle in event five but then watched as the "Big Fella " rode away for his second victory. Lucero won event six over Faria and that gave him three consecutive wins over him in their last two nights of racing. Brad Oxley held back the charges of Ronnie Correy to take event seven. Faria began the third round with an easy win over McConnell while Christian stayed perfect over Lucero and Mark Dwyer in event 11. Sandona picked up his only win of the night in event 12 but it as he end of the line or him as hi. bike then had d coronary and he was out' for tre night. Earlier in that heat Keith Chrisco and Oxley tangled with Chrisco going down extremely hard. He was only shaken up but his bike was totalled and he was also out for the night. Oxley fought off the determined bid of Lucero LO open the fourth round with a win. At the same time McConnell slumped to a third-place finish and in the end it cost him his ticket to the main. Christian's only defeat of the evening came at the hands of Faria in event 16. Christian led the first two circuits but as thev came into turn one on lap three Faria bumped him out of the way and then rode under him. Christian edged Oxley and Rob Pfetzing in event 18 and that would give him enough point to choose his main event starting position. Ronnie Correy scored the upset victory of the night by holding off Faria all the way to win event 19 whiJe Lucero tied' Faria with 13 points by winning event 20. Christian opted for the pole in the main and he put his English-made Weslake inLO the lead from the outset. Faria was out second but Oxley pushed him to tbird on the opener. Faria got back by Oxley on lap two and he charged after the leader. Christian blocked him as they came off turn four and he blo ked him again in the same spOt one lap later as Faria tried to use the inside to his advantage. The race belonged LO Cbristian and he walked away from the track with another Costa Mesa win. Faria did manage to hold second while Lucero got Oxley for third. Results MAIN: 1. Alan Christian (Wes); 2. Mike Faria (Jaw): 3. Steve Lucero (Wes). Knoxville HM to Huff By Bill Holt KNOXVILLE, IL, JUNE 28 The 17th round of D-I7's Din Track Serie rolled into Knoxville and was greeted by the Silver Rims M.C. The only thing that was classier than the way this club runs a program was theracing, and itcouldn't have gotten much better. Audie Huff Jr., the nemesis of the 500cc class in the mjdwest for the last two season, padded his reputation by styling his way to back to back wins in tbe 500cc and Open. Greg JooP hit number one first in the 125cc final, but his lead was short-lived. SCOll Huff, fresh from a Mini win, held his outside pole position all the way around turns one and two to take the lead. JooP and David Stanfield stayed close enough to make it a race but Huff stayed on the wide groove and held them off to take the
