Fisher took the holeshot in the "Money Run," leading Mississippi's Mike Stringer and Bobby Adams into the first turn. Faria ties Ventura Spdway record By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, JUNE 25 "Flyin' Mike" Faria won the Scratch main for the fourth time at Ventura this year. His 44th career win on a Tuesday night was good for a tie with Michael Bast for the all-time Ventura First Division main event record. Steve Lucero, the 1981 Ventura Track Champ, took borne a trophy for the second week in a row by taking Handicap honors. Faria won his scratch heat from me to you but got a sad gate in his semi, and suddenly was in third place behind Shawn McConnelI and Gary Hicks. Faria tried everything but couldn't get by Hicks until the youngster went too wide on turn two of the last lap, allowing "Flyin' Mike" to scoot by. Faria had to win the main twice to tie the record. He got a great ~tart as the tapes flew up - too good - and referee Andy Cadoue red-flagged the race after a lap with Faria ahead as the crowd booed. Faria rolled up to Cadoue. "What happened?" asked Faria. "Roller," said Cadone. "Who?" _asked Faria. "Youl" shouted Cadotte, pointing at Faria. On the restart, it was a copy of the first try without the roller - Faria got a killer gate and headed off to the record books. But McConnell got close olALheJast lap and got a wheel , under Faria on the last bend, nearly pulled even, and just lost by a wheel. Faria took a victory lap with his fist clenched in the air. Faria has won 44 times in less than five seasons - it took Bast IO years to win 44. Simi Valley rookie Bobby Simons got a chance to go fast with the hot guys in First Division. He almost took home the Handicap main trophy, too. Simons won his heat and semi easily, then led the main for four laps until he fell over all alone on the last lap. Doug Bowers, sensing his first Division trophy, inherited the lead, but Lucero and Faria sandwiched him on the final bend. Lucero snaked by for the win, but Bowers held off Faria. David Diaz won his third Ventura trophy, and first in Division Two, as he took the main off the zero. Canadian Nelson Coleman took Division Three honors and a chance to ride Division Two next time. Results SCRATCH: 1. Mike Faria; 2. Shawn McConnell; 3. Mark Dwyer. HANDICAP: 1. Stelle Lucero; 2. Doug Bower.; 3. Mike Feria. 2ND D/V: 1. David Diaz: 2. Jimmy Gentile: 3. Richard Perkins. 3RD DIV: 1. Lucero wins at Victorville Spdwy By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 5 Steve Lucero posted his second consecutive win at the Speedway USA Scratch main event. Lucero, sponsored by Shoei/ Maurice's Used Speedway Bikes/ Cirello Racing/STP/Oilzall on a Weslake, has been dividends as he took a first in the Scratch main just moments after taking second lO "Flyin' Mike" Faria in the Handicap five-lapper. In the Scratch main Faria and Lucero both entered the affair undefeated on the night. Faria, out of two, powered into the lead on the start just ahead of Lucero but it was Lucero riding around him as they went down the back chute on the opening lap. Third spot was being occupied by thrill merchanct "Fast Eddie" Castro with Andy Northrup in fourth. Faria would close in on Lucero in the bends but down the chutes Lucero would again establish some breathing room. That's how itcontinuedallthe way to Bill Smoth's checkered flag with only one surprising change. As they came off the final corner Castro shot by Faria and crossed the line in second. Faria's win in the Handicap main was beautiful. Coming from the 50yard line, both Faria, sponsored by Shoei/Oakley/Kal-Gard/George Wenn/Cody Products on a Jawa and Lucero weaved their way in and out of the traffic. Young Bobby Simons had been leading the event alI the way but as they took the white flag Faria and Lucero were bearing down on him. Going into turn one on the last lap Faria jammed it inside of Simons. There was no contact made but Simons drifted wide. That allowed Faria through and Lucero also took advantage. The fans loved it and when the checkered fell it was Faria over Lucero. Jim Blan (Jawa) won the Division Two main event over Scou Correy and the previous week's winner, Bentley Barreu, while Walt Foster held off a fast-closing Tony Bienert to win in Third Division. Results SCRATCH: 1. S'eve Lucero (Wes): 2. Ed Castro (Wesl: 3. Mike Feria (Jaw). HANDICAP: 1. Mike Faria (Jawl; 2. Steve Lucero (Wes); 3. Bobby Simons (Wes). Fariasefs Ventura Speedway record By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, JULY I "Flyin' Mike" Faria became the best ever to throw a leg over a speedway bike on a Tuesday night when he won the Handicap main from the back for his 45th career victory, eclipsing the old mark of 44 set by Mike Bast. Faria, the current Ventura Track Champ, also won the Scratch main for good measure -the fourth time he's done that. Riding like a maniac on the outside, where the aClion is, Faria came in second in his heat, but improved thereafter. He won his semi, increasing the tension for his record-setting attempt in the main. After a rousing cheer from the crowd, Faria got a great start in the main, and blew by fellow 4{)-yard-line ride~sSteve Lucero and Shawn McConnell by the first turn. Meanwhile, at the front of the race, Rocky Robinson, Doug Bowers and Ed Castro were into some wheelto-wheel action. Faria closed on the pack by the second lap, then around turn two, blew by Castro as if he were a painting on the crashwall, then went between Bowers and Robinson - and "Flyin' Mike" had the record in hand before turn three. As the crowd began to cheer, Faria began to pull away, ultimately crossing the line with his fist in the air. At thIS pomt, the program was SlOpped, and Faria was called to the start/finish line for a command performance. Promoter Jim Naylor pulled up in his van as the crowd gave "Flyin' Mike" a tanding ovation. Naylor gave Faria a couple of bottles of champagne, and a trophy six feet tall-taller than "Flyin' Mike" himself. The riders came out onto the track, and tossed Faria into the air, and better yet, even caught him. The inscription on the trophy read: "To Flyin' Mike Faria -the best ever at the Commotion By The Ocean. 45 wins." Faria wasted little time slaTling on his second 45 - he came out smoking and won the Scratch main. Ojai's Castro was second. Bentley Barrett, the speedway rider with the incredibly cool name, enjoyed his 1986 Ventura Raceway debut by taking D-2 honors off the zero. And Jon Boyer, wearing a pair of old Faria leathers won Third Divisiori, off the 10-yard-line. Results SCRATCH: 1. Mike Faria; 2. Ed Castro; 3. Brad Oxley. HANDICAP: 1. Mike Faria; 2.
