Berk initiaU y had a fairly lonely time in third until Strijbos, recovering from the first of two falls, eventually got by 17-year-old American Bobby Moore and started to push his compatriot. Almost together the two Dutchman slipped by the tiring Herring. Just when the crowd had settled down for a quiet last 15 minutes after a race full of drama, all hell broke loose. Van den Berk and Strijbos closed suddenly on Vehkonen and the trio bounced off each other for several laps. Seemingly unaffected by the heat, the trio raced on until Vehkonen managed to pull away slightly through traffic. Moore took advantage of a fall by Strijbos which sucked in Herring and moved through into third with two laps to go; Herring, meanwhile, ran out of gas. AI berto Barozzi, one half of the Italian Benelli team, slipped across the finish in a deceptive fifth after a relatively uneventful riqe while Ismo Vehkonen, Pekka's cousin, staged a magnificent charge 'n his Honda from 15th on lap one to~ixth at the flag. To everyone's surprise, the inj ured Contini hit the from at the end of the uphill start straight followed by Mike Kouki, who was briefly displaced by West German Dietrnan Lacher (KTM) before regaining second spot. Vehkonen was way down in seventh with Strijbos one place behind while the new third man in the title chase, Van den Berk was buried in 21st place. For once, misfortune was striking Kouki's rivals as the previously ill-starred Finn took full advantage of his changed luck. "I passed Contini on the fourth lap and then just didn't look back," he said. Kouki rode to a 38-second win, the first of his career. Herring was holding down a watchful third behind Contini and Strijbos after he had passed Lacher, but misfortune hit the Brit and West German almost simultaneously. Her.ring sustained a front flat while Lacher's KTM motor slowed, dropping him to sixth before the damage worsened and he pulled out. Alain Lejeune took over the third spot on his Suzuki before corning under pressure from Strijbos, who had worked his way through the pack, unlike teammate Vehkonen who was still circulating in eighth after beingdetuned in his early-race crash. Strijbos was soon past and set off after Contini, who was still some distance ahead. With the second-race pace being somewhat slower than the first, due to the heat and bumps, he eventually caught the Italian and slipped past. At the finish, large gaps separated the first four and the following four riders. Ismo Vehkonen had once agam put in a workmanlike performance for fifth in front of his cousin Pekka while Van den Berk overcame a sticking gear lever to take seventh. Many riders admiued to being badly affected by the heat during the second race, among them Moore, who worked his way up the field to seventh spot. • Results OVERALL: 1.
