peeted broken collarbone, at the corkscrew aCler losing the front end, and
the race is between two men.
Mamola and Baldwin turned 1:06s
for 13 of the next 14 laps, the single
exception being a I:07 for Mamola
on lap eight, in traffic, and then
Mamola erased Baldwin's four-second
lead with a 1:05.95 on lap 19 and a
1:05.97 on lap 20, two low 1:06s and
the fastest lap of two days, a 1:05.80
on lap 23.
Baldwin and Mamola are now
nose-to-tail, and complicating matters is the fact that they're racing fulltill through lapped riders. One lap,
Mamola leads into tum nine, passing
a lapped rider on the outside, but
Baldwin sails up the inside of Mamola and lappee and regains the lead
out of the corner.
Three laps to go. Mamola has body
contact wi th Polen entering the corkscrew; Mamola and Baldwin run into
turn nine, lapping Renfrow; Mamola starts to go inside Renfrow, gets
squeezed off, grabs more brake, pulls
right to the ou LSide of Renfrow, barely
under control, fighting the bike's
urge to get sideways, geLS pointed at
the straight, accelerates and instantly
is full-lock sideways, sliding. The
Yamaha snaps back, upright, almost
high-sides Mamola, whose feet fly off
the pegs; Baldwin slips inside and
accelerates away as Mamola catches
it, slides again, and accelerates past
Renfrow.
Mamola makes it up, but can't get
past, the last laps alll:06s and 1:07s.
Baldwin wins by an official margin
of 0.180 seconds.
Franklin had crashed out at turn
nine at about the same time Rainey
fell in the corkscrew. Ballington is
third in the second segement, the
only rider nOllapped by Baldwin and
Mamola, followed by Renfrow, Goodfellow, Polen, Chivington, Pinksta[[,
Brazilian Marco Greco on a Honda
RSSOO and Malcolm Hill on his
Suzuki GSXR750.
Baldwin geLS the overall win with
his 2-1 finishes, ahead of Mamola,
Ballington, Renfrow, Goodfellow.
"It came down to equal bikes,
equal riders and an equal team," said
Baldwin. "It all came down to luck at
the end."
"The last lap I had visions of a
Day-Glo bike hilling the guard rail,"
said Mamola. "On the last lap I
would have to ride too hard. I just
backed off a little bit. I'm second in
World Championship points and I
didn't want to do anything to jeo. pardize my chances there. I could see
at the end I would have to ride a little
too hard to win."
For me there were two races out
there," said Ballington. "There was
the race for the GP boys and one for
the local boys. I consider mysel£ a
local boy because I've been doing the
Camel Pro series, and I was. trying to
win the local boy race. I was trying to
beat Renfrow and Rainey for points."
